W///'s combo build thread (E36 and E92 M3)

Long time lurker here, so figure it's about time to write a build thread. Rather than have one for each car, I think I'll go by chronological order.

Always been a huge BMW fan my entire life and my first car was a silver E46 328i, followed by an E30 vert. Neither were modded, but I learned to work on cars on them. I've always been a huge fan of ///M cars, and when I saw the E92 M3 Concept online, I was in love. However, I loved the E46 M3 just as much and it was more in my price range. Long story short, I ended up skipping the E46 M3 and saved up for an E92 M3.

My requirements were E92, 6MT, CF roof and preferably in Melbourne Red. This car popped up on my Autotrader alert and completely fell in love. The color combo reminded me of an Individual car. Unfortunately, it was all the way in Los Angeles, which is completely cross country from me. I ended up doing a PPI (it only needed a new oil cap, that's literally it) and had it shipped to me. Here are the Autotrader pics:

http://i1162.photobucket.com/albums/...5d0161_640.jpg

http://i1162.photobucket.com/albums/...1345ad_640.jpg
http://i1162.photobucket.com/albums/...f9579a_640.jpg

The car showed up and it was everything I could have hoped for. It was absolutely mint and looked stunning in person. I was absolutely in love. At that point, all I wanted to do were painted sidemarkers, CF splitters and eventually ZCP's (famous last words...)

For a while, I drove it more or less stock apart from a few cosmetic mods and the OEM muffler mod (sounds amazing). Here's a pic of my M3 and a friend's E39 M5:
http://i1162.photobucket.com/albums/...81323082_h.jpg
http://i1162.photobucket.com/albums/...pscb6331a9.jpg

Eventually switched to ZCP's with spacers:

http://i1162.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7e6a94af.jpg

A few months go by and I had the mod bug. Ended up getting test pipes, which made the exhaust combo way too loud. Went through a couple of mufflers before settling with an Eisenmann Race. Full catless + Eisenmann Race = the best sounding M3 of all time IMHO (apart from the M3's with an S85 swap)

An opportunity came up on one of the forums. A member was trading his car in and said he'd be cool with swapping wheels with me + cash. I think the HRE C20's (19x9.5 front, 19x11 rear) completely transforms the car:

You can also see I have rear CF bits along with LCI taillights. Next up was a drop (Swift springs). An incredibly good ride, and really enhances the HRE.

Changed out the motor mounts with new OEM ones:

I got tired of the splitters because they didn't fit that great anyway. Got a deal on a damaged Mode Carbon lip. Always wanted to learn how to fiberglass so I repaired it myself:

This is the point where the E92 is more or less where I want to be. THe lip has been on and off (kind of a pain to install), but otherwise, that's how the car looks now. This is when I decided I wanted to add another car. It came down to an E36 M3, an E46 M3, an S2k and an R56 MINI JCW.

I ended up going with an E36 M3. If you guys haven't figured out at this point, the E92 is a keeper. Therefore, I wanted something as different to the E92 as possible, but decided that I wanted to stick to BMW's. Right at the same time, this beautiful E36 M3 in my favorite color (Techno Violet) popped up locally. I couldn't believe my eyes.

The specs:
1999 E36 M3 coupe 5MT
Techno Violet on Dove
122k miles on it when I got it. Previous owner put 18k miles on it in one year, mostly highway. So this is a pretty low mileage car
All bushings completely done

Just way way wayyyy too good to pass up. Here's the day I picked it up:

Re: W///'s combo build thread

A new chapter begins. The E36 was very well maintained by a local BMW enthusiast. Here are some more pics of the exterior:

http://i1162.photobucket.com/albums/...ps262310e8.jpg

Interior was pretty clean for its age. Some wear on the bolsters, but nothing huge. Headliner and the rest of the car looks great too. I just need to change the recline gear on the driver side, replace the center air vent (replacement sitting in the garage) and replace the tired looking floor mats:
http://i1162.photobucket.com/albums/...psb1742128.jpg

I think within 1 week of having the car, I already started modding it. One of my coworkers had a really clean set of staggered LTWs:
http://i1162.photobucket.com/albums/...pse2b86509.jpg
http://i1162.photobucket.com/albums/...psae419448.jpg

Temp tags are still on the car haha :D

http://i1162.photobucket.com/albums/...psa4ea72f9.jpg
http://i1162.photobucket.com/albums/...ps738f02af.jpg

When I buy a used car, I always go ahead and change all the fluids. On top of that, I decided for peace of mind to redo the entire cooling system. Went with Z3M S54 radiator, Stewart water pump ect ect...

Well, only 2 weeks later, this happens:
http://i1162.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5a590384.jpg

As I was leaving work, the clutch pedal goes to the ground. Had it towed home and I figured it was just going to be the slave cylinder. That happened in early October and the E36 is still out of commission. Long story short, the transmission has been dropped, and found out that the clutch fork is bent. So of course, while you are in there, might as well change everything (so much for just a $60 slave cylinder). Here's the parts list so far, pretty much all OEM:
- New flywheel + clutch (old one had wear)
- New clutch slave cylinder
- New clutch master cylinder
- New shifter complete refresh kit from Pelican
- Fixing 5th gear lean

Unrelated to trans, but still on the to-do:
- New M3 trunk badge
- Complete redoing belts, pulleys and tensioners (hydraulic)

That's the story for both M3's so far. The mod bug is coming on strong, so I'm itching to change a few things, most likely next year due to this transmission debacle.

For E92:
- Go 275/30/19 up front
- Get wheel stud kit
- Replace OEM pads with Ferodo DS2500 as they are pretty worn (fluid has already been changed to ATE super blue)
- In the distant future: rod bearings, solid diff and subframe bushings, SS line. Having driven the F80 and new Porsches, I would love a good set of BBK because the ones on the E9x really aren't all that great after you've driven those.

I should mention I do Blackstone oil reports on the E92 on a regular basis and everything looks superb. Thus why I'm in no rush to do rod bearings. FYI, the car is currently at 82k miles.

For the E36:
- ZKW headlights
- Will most likely get 2 more 8.5" LTW's to run square setup. I change my mind all the time though haha. Also a big fan of ACS Type 1
- Eventually get an OEM trunk spoiler (just regular one, not LTW's).

More to come on the E36 soon!

Purple cars are pretty girly, but yours is ok I guess. :drums:
I wish you were on the left side of the country. It would be cool to have both of our cars at a meet or track day. They are practically twins separated at birth. I'm pretty jealous man. You have basically the exact car I have, and the car that I so desperately want to buy, but just can't bring myself to drain out my bank account for. Not to mention with the most choice mods I can imagine on it. Keep on doing what you're doing.

It drives me nuts that BMW refuses to bring TV back. They can do Dakar, Estoril and Hellred, but not my favorite color.

Thanks for the kind words. Your car is literally my motivation to keep working on my E36. She needs a good detail to look like yours, and I'm so desperate for a trunk spoiler. Unfortunately have other priorities on that car so I have to hold tight.

P.S. The price for E9x M3s have tanked lately. You should get one in a year or so. I can't recommend them enough, it's an awesome car.

Thanks! With the way I have car ADD, who knows what I'll be writing about in a few years haha.

Lots of parts incoming for the E36. I'm hoping to have it back by next week, I really do miss driving it, it's been 2 months now.
