I didn't know there was an actual test - I just used the datalogging functions to plot my timing to make sure everything was correct.

Fairly straight forward. Pop off your back seat (just pull forward and up) and undo the bolts that cover your fuel pump. It took about 15 minutes.

Thanks for the input all, I'll see how -3.0 does as far as tire wear. I only had the tires for about 4 months and ~5000 street/highway miles at -2.25, but there wasn't any noticeable inside tire...

Here's the thing. The full range of motion of the cam itself is say, 70 degrees.
It's not necessarily the VANOS actuator/pistons that need to be installed "fully retarded", it doesn't matter...

mmmm - your VANOS can't "over adjust" because those sprockets have a fixed amount of movement, they'll simply have a shorter range of adjustment.

I couldn't get enough clearance to disconnect the sprockets from the VANOS unless I loosened the springs that are friction-torqued onto the cam gears. Loosening those 6 bolts throws off your VANOS...

Gauge cluster needles fading?
I've noticed the needles on my speedo/tach were fading a bit unevenly (compared to the rest of them, the orange is very faded and spotty). Anyone ever replace these, or come up with a solution?

The rear main seal IS a clutch job - the clutch/flywheel have to come off for you to have access to it. You should plan to replace those items as well, as this is a pretty labor intensive process.

Well, unless you had it aligned it wouldn't get far enough for the bolts to reach for you to do this.
Def. get the alignment tool - I had to order mine separately from the clutch kit from Turner.

Flushing the oil at this point isn't going to help - its shaped in such a way that there is a pocket in the front by the timing chain, so if the shim is indeed there, then it'd never magically jump...

Yes, the timing chain goes all the way into the oil pan (I once dropped a small wrench in there, because I like to punish myself).
I wouldn't dare start that motor until you find it.

Clunking over bumps? I'd double check the the nut that secures the piston to the top mount/camber plate, like Prit suggested. It being even slightly loose can cause clunking over bumps.

I've removed the caps as quickly as a few hours after I last ran the motor (to not burn myself on hot oil) with zero problems.
