Default 1997 M3/4 Rear Differential Leak

Just got some new shocks, springs and bars and was looking under the car and noticed the rear diff. has oil on one side where the right rear axle bolts up to the diff.. Has anyone replaced that seal yet and how hard is it to do?

Mines leaking too ...the DIY looks pretty straight-forward, just trying to find a time to tackle the project.

When the axles are pulled out, do you suppose to replace them with new seals to avoid leaks? Reason I ask, the back plate is covered with oil. I'm not sure if its the back cover gasket or the axle seals.

The diffs typically leak from the rear cover or the output shaft seals. The flange pulls out of the diff without unbolting anything, but you need to undo all of those bolts to replace the seal iirc.

Redline or Royal Purple, or Amsoil are all great choices

Looks like I will be needing a gasket for the rear cover. Is it hard to take out? Looks a little tight up there. Has anyone here replaced the gasket? Thanks for your help guys!

Best places to find them? Crappy autozone doesn't have any here.
