Default Do you use Automatic on your DCT?

I have only had my car for 6 weeks and a couple of thousand miles but barring five minutes on the first day I had it, I have never put my car in Automatic. I was wondering how often other folks use the Automatic mode.

I use it all the time. I don't find it rewarding at all to pull the paddles for daily driving.

I never use automated mode. Shifting is more fun...around town I use the shifter; out in the country or track, I use the paddles. If I had wanted an automatic, I would have bought a 335i with steptronic.

I use it during highway cruising and stop and go traffic. So, that's more like 75% of my driving time.

Sooo basically......the automatic mode in the DCT/SMG cars is slowly turning owners who swear that paddle flappin is just as fun as a MT into owners who use the automatic transmission mode in their flappy paddle box more than the flappy paddles. :

Sounds like BMW M might as well start offering pure automatics

continued paddle use in normal driving conditions seems to me like quiet desperation trying to talk one self into having made the right choice in a person who really would have had more fun MT with 2900 in the pocket. Not a knock against the dct, the technology is amazing, but just not engaging. It feels like a steptronic auto with no delay, but the shift is so smooth in normal driving conditions and the lack of engine braking on downshifts ( at normal driving speeds) make it irrelevant in my experience.

that's what I love about SMG. the auto mode in SMG sux so bad that it forces the owner to use the manual mode 99% of the time. But in the DCT, it feels so smooth that owner can hardly differentiate auto and manual mode. That's why there isn't much of a point to drive DCT in manual mode in every situation.

In my SMG, I only use auto mode when I'm stuck in heavy traffic at speed less 20km/hour. At which point, there is no point in shifting manually anyway. I will flip to auto and blast my music until the traffic clear up, flip to manual mode and gun it.
