Default Car dies at idle, started happening soon after emissions recall

When coming to a stop in neutral my car pretty consistently dies. Problem is slightly worse when cold but not much. I tried swapping cam position sensors, all 6 coils, tps, cleaning mass airflow sensor, new air filter, plugs, etc etc.

I swear this problem started soon after having my dme re-flashed by the dealer for that emissions software update. I also noticed the car misfires slightly while warming up, has anyone else experienced this? If so what did you do about it?

Stepping on the brakes while rolling to a stop in neutral almost always kills the engine too. Car has gone into limp mode several times, check engine light comes on and off when it wants, EML light as well. HELP!

I searched for this problem but couldn't find this exact problem, but if this is the 10,000th post on this by all means please link me to a thread and delete this one. Thanks!

Mine had this recall performed the day before I decided to purchase it and I did note that when I came to a stop no more the half a mile from the dealer/my work :p that the car died at a stop sign. I started it back up, and have been driving it ever since and no problem(note: recall was performed 5mar10, I bought my car 6mar10) so about a week now and no issues.

Just a thought but since you mentioned the symptoms are aggravated while depressing the brake pedal you may have a vacuum leak somewhere in the brake booster system.

Try this... with the car parked and in neutral with parking brake engaged and with the engine running at idle at normal operating temperature, repeatedly apply the brakes and see if this brings the engine to a stall. If it does I would suspect a vacuum leak.

This has happened to a few people. I don't know how much relief you're going to get if you've got evosport software loaded, but I believe in a few rare cases, the DME has gotten hosed. I've communicated with a user here in threads and privately, who had this problem. I encouraged her to have coil recall done (it was), all fuel and air elements, new filters, cleaned injectors, etc. It gets better for a few days then the problem comes back. I told her to have them put it on a wideband sensor-don't recall if they checked a/f. They reflashed that car ... at least 3 or 4 times trying to fix it. There were multiple versions of this update, and BMW had some server problems at this time. Many folks have experienced rough idle without stalling as well. My theory is they've put the a/f on the lean side on idle to save the cats with this update, and it has put things on the edge at idle; I have no proof of this.

The vacuum leak mentioned is worth checking out as well.
Let us know what you find out, especially what fixes it.

I am the "her" that RedM3/4 speaks of. If you would have asked me last week if my car was fixed I would have said yes, but unfortunately last Friday morning it stalled on me again. The car would either stall every day or would go a month a half. My saga started exaclty three days after the recall.

So far, either me or the dealership have done the following:

New coils, spark plugs, fuel filter, inspection 2 stuff, smg relay
cleaned the idle control valve and the throttle body. The DME was flashed a few times and the SMG recalibration was run as well as numerous times of the adaptations. All this was done from July to December.

In January, the car stalled again. Now, here comes the really weird part. I took it back into the dealership and they installed a new MAF and ran the adaptation. The SES light came with the code of running rich. He put my old MAF back in and ran the adaptation and the SES light came on with the code running lean. Most of the time I wouldn't have any codes. This went on for about a week with the two MAF's. Also, at this time, the car was checked for vacuum leaks and there were none. He even took it to a friend of his at an Indy Shop and ran the Autologic program, same result.

So now with my old MAF the car was ok until this last Friday. I now have a brand new freshly ordered MAF that is on loan from the dealership to see if this fixes it. I am at a wait and see. If it fixes it I will pay for the MAF, if not we will try something else.

Hopefully, I might make it past the month and half this time.

I just had my recall done 2days ago... Had a small rough idle this morning for maybe about 10-15secs, then it went away, but then again I put all the heating units on pretty much at once, which may have caused that... Started up fine after work and didn't have any issued driving or stopping. Seeing how some people are having issues, I'm curious what could be the cause and how many people out there are having issues now. Also, could certain mods possibly cause this?

My car is bone stock. I don't have any idle issues. It just will randomly stall.
