Default Gore Canyon Whitewater Race video w/carnage

This is the premier Class V whitewater race of the year. I've run the canyon numerous times (although the kayak sneak line on this rapid makes it slightly easier), but never have participated in the race.

You can take a commercial raft down the river, but they all portage Gore Rapid which is where all of this footage occurs.

got a question for you Dan. A bunch of my friends here do outrigger canoe racing in the ocean, obviously the whitewater stuff is more dangerous, but what do you think is more physically demanding? have you ever done any ocean kayaking?

I'm not sure that the whitewater stuff is more dangerous at a certain level. I've heard of some pretty intense ocean kayaking near rocky shores in big swells.

I have never been in an ocean kayak, but I can imagine that on flat water it's not too demanding (kind of like walking), but as soon as you add current it becomes a whole different ballgame. I guess it's all what you make of it jsut like a river. You can go from Class 1 to Class 5.

That looks like a blast, now what would I need to do if I wanted to participate in something like that?

I have no idea what you were trying to say here.

To participate in the race you would need to have a raft and a team of Class V rafters to paddle with you. What is not on this video is a young guy who was relatively inexperienced and nearly drowned this year if it wasn't for the heroic efforts of a few people on the river.

If you want to run the river, there are several commercial rafting companies that will take you down. They all walk around Gore Rapid because the liability of running it is too high but you would still have the time of your life......or you could spend several years learning to kayak (30-50 days a year) and hit it up with me.

If you are interested in more video of the race showing some of the other rapids, check this link out: http://www.vimeo.com/14602956
