I got under my car yesterday to change the oil myself for the first time (I've been taking it to a local indie shop previously).
As I pop off the black plastic cap, I expect to see the oil drain bolt where I would use my 6mm allen bit and ratchet. Instead there is a 13mm bolt, and I can't loosen it due to it being right next to the metal lip (held in by 6 small bolts). I cant fit the socket around the drain bolt at all. I searched all over to see if a situation like this has happened before, and I can't call the indie shop because they are closed until after Thanksgiving. Any ideas or thoughts would be much appreciated... Will post pics when I get home later tonight. Last edited by hangloose; Thu, Nov-18-2010 at 07:36:34 PM. |

When I got a magnetized bolt.. it also was a 13mm bolt. The only socket that would fit was my snap-on 13mm since it is a thin wall socket. The standard craftsman one wouldn't fit.

I will see if I can find a socket at Home Depot that would fit, although it seems really close right now. Another thing I was thinking of using is that tool that is shaped like a claw (not sure of the technical name) where you can wrap it around the bolt and then plug the ratchet into the base of the claw type tool. |

Here is a couple shots of what it looks like.
![]() ![]() I just tried to use a thin wall socket I borrowed from a friend and it was not able to fit in between that metal rim that is right next to and level with the bolt... Last edited by hangloose; Thu, Nov-18-2010 at 10:41:59 PM. Reason: fixed images |
