Wilmar thanks for the inspiration. I have just fitted the Westfalia and used the OEM aluminium bumper carrier rather than fabricating my own.

This has been the main reason I haven't bought the hitch yet. (Well, and the price)
I saw a square adapter on a Volkswagen forum a while ago, but when I tried to look for it again, I couldn't find it.

if you find an adapter to make it work with US spec receiver for bicycle rack it would be great

the fitment of the westfalia is perfect

This thread didn't have part numbers. These are from the m3cutters post.

From the link in the first post, the Westfalia hitch is part 303230.
For less money Schiedmann also lists a non-detachable version for the E46, which is part 303153. I can't confirm if this fits or not.

Both of these can be found on e-bay, e-bay UK or some British and German online shops.

The aluminum carrier mentioned is part # 51 12 8 195 324 . This was the original BMW carrier that came on the M3 in 2001.

The m3cutters post lists 2 bolts to attach the carrier to the towbar, part # 51 11 7 070 198 . These are T50 torx bolts.
The hardware picture for the tow kit shows 2 long hex bolts, which may be equivalent.

Some pics:

Carbon fiber carrier (#5):

The price on the carbon fiber support is so high, selling it would finance the whole project if it could be sold for retail.

So this hitch is plug and play for 2001 M3's that came with the aluminum bumper carrier? Mine is convertible, and realoem shows that it has the same carrier. Would there be anything about the vert trunk that would cause this not to fit?

This is what I want to get for my E36 M3....my previous E36 has a visible hitch assembly which is not really that nice....
