Had a few questions. My car is currently set up with a 'track' alignment and I'm aggressive enough that I'm wearing through tires decently fast. I'm wondering how many people DD their M3's as well as get them on the track and have an alignment for both street and track. Does anyone get both alignments done and really switch between the two. Now I'm not saying it's put on an alignment rack and getting another alignment but quickly switching the camber and toe back for the street. Anyone do this?
Suggestions are welcome.

^ Doesn't that put toe completely out of wack?

It certainly changes it. I had the shop that did my alignment set the toe to 0 at -2 camber. At -3.5, the front toes out to 1/4" total. I'm sure that my adjustments back and forth are not completely accurate, but I knew that going in. I don't drive my car that much on the street, so a fraction of a degree here and there doesn't really bother me. On that note, I have done quite a few changes back and forth, so I'm probably due for another alignment to square everthing up again.

As long as your toe is proper, you shouldn't be wearing your tires too bad...

Camber and toe are linked generally. I think there's one camber plate manufacturer that allows camber adjustments w/o affecting toe, but I forget who it is.

I run two alignments, one for the street and one for the track. The front I have my camber plates pulled all the way out with toe set to 0. On the street this gives me -2.0/-2.1 camber left/right. I have a mark on my camber plates so when I go to the track I push them in and that mark is for -3.5* of camber. When you add more camber in front on the M3 the toe will start to go out slightly. So my settings change from 0 toe to a bit of toe out when I push the plates in. This is a good thing for handling as a bit of toe out up front helps turn in. The rear remains the same for both my street and track alignment.
They are linked. Change your camber and your toe changes. The manufacture you are referring to is TCKline, they say you can adjust your camber up to -1.5* without loosing track of your toe. This doesn't mean your toe won't change though when camber is changed, just that you won't loose track of it.. ie you move your plate from point A to point B, then back to point A and the toe will be back to the same setting as it was initially.

If your toe is good, you shouldn't be wearing through tires. I'm at-3.5F and -2.2R and have had excellent life on my RE-11's.

What is the prefered front to rear camber ratio? I have mine set to -2 F/-3.5F for the track, and factory at the back (I want to say -1, not sure though). The car handled pretty well at the track with this configuration, but I'm wondering if it would handle better with a bit more camber at the back.
I'm thinking of picking up a set of camber arms, if they allow quick and consistent camber adjustments like camber plates up front. |
