Yeah I know it kind of rhymed haha anyhow I thought I would contribute to this forum by posting about what I used to clean my engine bay. I got the idea to try it from Dan on the Mfest forums, so original credit goes to him.
The secret formula is (drum roll) ...Scrubbing Bubbles Foam! I know it sounds weird because it's intent is for shower cleaning but this stuff seriously does wonders. I have tried most off the shelf cleaners but most are a petroleum based. Which for me left residue and the smell of burnt fuel. The main concern I am sure most people have is if it is safe for engines and the paint? YES! Not only have I had zero problems with it but on the original thread they had a Chemist off of the M5 forums check to see if the chemicals in scrubbing bubbles was harmful for the engine parts and paint and determined it was perfectly fine. Disclaimer: I am not responsible for anything that may happen to your engine or engine bay. It is at the sole responsibility of the do it yourselfer. (This was done on a E46 M3 different bmw's will have parts in different locations, so please follow the steps to ensure that you cover the necessary parts to keep safe from spraying water. Steps: 1. Make sure the engine is cool. Never spray the product on a hot engine. 2. Wrap all electrical connectors with a plastic bag and or some sort of plastic wrapping to ensure that water does not effect the electrical areas. (I covered the wires behind the firewall on the passenger side, my two small boxes for the Angel Eyes (if you have them),and the space by the headlight wires by the front frame. 3.Cover the Intake filter (if you have an after market one), the MAF, HID Ballast's and Alternator with plastic wrapping as well. 4. Spray a generous amount of scrubbing bubbles in the engine bay. 5. Let it soak in for about 5 minutes 6.Rinse with thoroughly with a some what light spray of water. 7. Start the engine and let it warm up to help dry. 8. enjoy! Here are some pics I took! Here is how dirty it was. ![]() Here it is and this is after about 3 weeks of driving it and it's still clean! ![]() ![]() Here is the original post with pics of other people's cars as well. http://www.mfestforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2833 I hope this helps you guys and enjoy your clean engines! ![]()

hmmmm, possibly a good idea. I think I'll try in on my dd first. Like you the smell of petroleum after using gunk, etc is bad...

Tried it last night on my family hauler, (528iT) and it works really, really well. Nice tip! And at $4 a can, I think I can do this about 20 times!

i have a method that I've been using since 97 on my 'ol E36 M3.
Spray all the wire connectors with WD40. Then get a brake cleaner and rinse all areas that have a heavy build-up of grease; avoiding to spray it on paint. Start spraying the engine bay with water to aggregate. Get a bucket full of soap and preferably hot water. A little elbow grease with a towel and a brush, and rinse off completely. Dry the area that can be dried with a towel, and let it sit minimum of 30 minutes before starting the engine. Works all the time. |
