I think it depends on the person. Both cars are pretty equal.

E39 has space
E46 appeals to the younger crowd

E39 has torque
E46 handles better

IMO <25 E46 M3 >25 E39 M5

have both cars, m5 is great for drama free driving, torque down low for good maneuverability around town.
m3 is for taking the long back road home
if i can only have 1 car, it'd be m5.
i can't imagine driving m3 everyday... the ride quality is pretty rough...

I had an e39 540i m sport and now own an e46 m3. It REALLY depends on what you're doing with it. If it's a daily driver, i would prefer the m3 because it gets better gas mileage and is a smaller car overall. I think the ride quality is great on it...but that's my opinion. I upgraded to BC racing coilovers and the ride is 10x smoother than stock.

If you have kids that you will be driving everywhere, I would go with the m5...but then again, if i had kids i wouldn't be buying an m5 in the first place...

Thanks for all the advice guys, both are great cars and I would buy both if I could

Think I'll get the M3, I don't really need 4 doors and a full blown V8 right now. It will be my daily driver but it will be mostly on long twisty back roads than in an urban environment. Can't wait!!
