Default Re: DIY: Resistor Mod To Cure Summertime SMG Blues

So I did this mod about two months ago and it worked! That is until yesterday. I really thought I had solved this problem on the cheap but now it is even worse. So first off I think I actually have a bad pump. This happened after a S6 hard shift into second and then I got the yellow cog. The car was still fully warmed up on a hot day. I get the error code p1717. Before the fix I used to get the p1717 and another p code.

The strange thing is that before this mod my car would drop out of gear into 0 after getting the yellow cog and that was it. My car still remained in neutral and engine running. Now after the fix this last time I got the yellow cog my car dropped in to 0 and then a few seconds after my engine shut off and I LOST POWER STEERING on the road!!! It really freaked me out and I consider it to be extremely dangerous at this point. Of course I let it cool off for 30 minutes in a parking lot I nursed it to, and then I drove it home. Later that night I took it out for a short drive and really took it though the gears and everything ran perfect. What is going on? (It was night time so not hot outside)

I just replaced the salmon relay about 2 months ago.

Here are some other problems my car has that I know about. First in the morning sometimes I will try to start the engine it won't do anything with the key turned for about 10-15 seconds and then finally it just starts out of nowhere like a normal car would start. Other times it starts right up. This usually only happens in the morning and after work it will fire up almost every time as normal. I don't know if this has anything to do with the issue but I just wanted to get anything else out there that could help.

If this does turn out to be a pump issue and not a temp issue what do you all think of a refurbished pump unit or ebay? I really don't want to shell out 4k on this. Thanks for the help!

I've had this mod done for a while now! I think almost a year?

Anyways, been through many HOT days, and even a track day at 100 degrees plus, as well as another around 80-85 degrees and had ZERO issues!!!

p1717 is too generic for the SMG transmission. You have to get the codes read from a proper scanner for our cars. Generic code readers are ok for engine related codes so you can get at least get a basic idea of what's going on but for the SMG it doesn't really tell you much at all.

By your initial description, if everything was fine until that hard S6 shift... my first thoughts are gear position sensor or actuator. Try taking it around the block on another hot day but shift at a lower rpm and see what it does. You can leave it in S6 or S5 but don't rev it up near redline when you shift.

There's a thread on the start symptom you mentioned, go through it and see it the info relates and if it could be a solution for what you're experiencing. I would sometimes get a delayed start after the car was up to temp, but after installing that resistor, I noticed the delay went away. I could run the car then shut it off, get back in a few minutes later and it would start right up with no delays. So maybe your issue is more related to the thread I mentioned or maybe it's a battery or contact issue like Daytona mentioned.

The car continued to fail and drop out of gear with engine shutdown as I was trying to get to a parking lot to let it cool down. At this time I was just babying the car and shifting at around 2.5k. As for the battery the connections are tight and correctly positioned. At this point I am thinking it still could be a heat related issue. The best way to make the car fail is to drive it around for a while and get it hot and then stop the engine for like 10 minutes to say go to the bank. When coming out the engine is really hot and that is when it will usually fail after a couple shifts.

Mod was done a year ago with one recurrence so not bad for a cheap fix. Last month cog light came back on in 80 degree weather and no hard driving. Didn't kick me out of gear until I got to my driveway but popped right back into first when I tapped the paddle.
Two days later, started the car cold in garage, cog light on and service engine light. Drove straight to dealer.
Their only fix is to replace the SMG pump, so as of today they are replacing SMG pump, new paddleshifters/microswitches and fixing two oil leaks.
Someone please pass me the lube please, this is gonna hurt.

Did resistor today, and hood sensors adjustment... NO GOOD, still dropped out of gear... thinking gear position sensor now.

that wire inside the white sure is brittle! I saw that there's an easier way to do this from the ECU box.. damnit!

Doing this mod tomorrow as well as getting some CHF 11s SMG fluid because i need to top it off. Anyways, the SMG light only comes on During HOT days and In the city driving. I have aftermarket headers (SuperSprint) which kind of helps to a certain extent.

Today I had enough and I need to find a fix for this "Overheating issue"

I live in houston and for those who have done this mod. Where can i find these resistors? Should i use resistors from Radio shack for a temporary fix or?

Thanks for the help in advance.

The Radio Shack's around me didn't have the ohm's I needed. There's a Fry's in Texas I believe, best bet is going there.
