If you are comparing a TVR, you don't know what the M3 is/was supposed to be.

this discussion was brought up about the most powerful inline 6, which BMW, unfortunately, did not have in the M3

I have no idea why you think that way.

Oh please. TVRs are like supermodels. In your lifetime, you may, but probably will not, actually see one as you go about your daily routine. So, for practical purposes, they don't exist.

Marketing is clever. Sports = sedan? It will always be the case that a four door communicates "compromise". Nevermind the visual aesthetics.

I see that you've not received a relevant reply.

Imagine that! God's car doesn't have the most powerful i-6. Don't post that in the e46 sexshun.

Truth, but when did BMW do there first sport sedan? Just a bit confusing... m5 is only sedan m6 is only coupe and convertible(for the sunny places) but not sure if at the beginning of m3s when e30 was built did they build a sedan? Why wait until e36?

The 1984 introduction of what became known as the first M car, an E28 5er fitted with a variant of the M1's engine, was branded a "saloon/sedan"; the fastest production sedan in the world, but not "sports sedan". For whatever reason, BMW avoided the word "sports". Maybe that was to throw off the Porsche owners that would soon be eating that car's dust on the autobahn.

The first M3 sedan was a 1994 model with a 3.0 liter i6.

The common denominator for the M3 model is the coupe with sedan and verts populating less than 100% of the M3 generations.

Well spoken, also when did it become important to even consider these types of models... vert/sedan. I suppose from a marketing stand point. In comparison to other ..."sports" cars such as vette or viper those will never be sedans... Just something to think about, didnt mean to stray off topic

When BMW decided that it wanted to increase its overall profits for the M3. Effectively, everything since the E30 has been a marketing exercise with $$$ as the most influential factor for determining which model variants are built.

In teh e46 sexshun there's a thread with the same video in the OP that's very much On Topic.

The sedan is more torsionally rigid and is only marginally heavier. IMO it's sportier than the coupe... As well as being HUGELY better looking and more practical.

I laugh at people who really think the M3's ancestry is from a "true-bred" line of sports cars. The M3 from the beginning was never a true bred "sports car" in the same sense a vette would be.
Think about it, its chassis origins are in the 3-series, which in its most basic form is a 4-door sedan.
Sure, the "M3" badge/moniker originated from motorsports, but the actual chassis originates from a luxury-compact sedan. And yes, the E30 M3 was a track monster that won many victories but it was in a class of "touring cars", i.e. sedans modified for racing. Don't try to convince yourself that the E30/E36/E46/E9X chassis was developed specifically for a "pure sports car" model because if it were, it would not share the same code as the series models.

The E30 M3 is sometimes called a "sports sedan/saloon", especially in the UK. This is because it was built on a sedan chassis (E30 3-series), has the interior dimensions of a sedan, as well as its amenities, minus 2 doors. For this reason, it is coined a "2-door saloon".

To dismiss an M3 sedan as not "sporty" is completely absurd.
