Mike Miller from Bimmer magazine has an excellent maintenance schedule for BMW's available. It's suggests excellent intervals for work, and offers alternatives for BMW fluids (mainly Redline) and explains why. He's asked that it not be posted on the web, but he'll e-mail it to you (Word doc); just shoot him an e-mail at techqa@bimmer-mag.com

The impellers are plastic but from my understanding its a different plastic material from our predecessors. There hasn't been many cases of our pumps going bad as much as the thermostats.

Ian, how about using Redline oil instead the BMW oil for the tranny & diff? Pete - what's the dealer's take on this? My car's almost due for Inspeciton I, and I was going to request that they use Redline oil instead (I would provide the oil).

I don't see a problem with that. If you provide it and request for it it should be ok, but you're giving me more work to do since the trans fluid and diff fluid are all in a drum already

ps are you still covered under new car warranty? If so it might void any warranty issues with the diff and trans in the future.

Alternator probably isn't much more than removing the airbox and the accessory belt. I've taken the airbox off a couple of times before and the alternator looked like it would come on out pretty easily at that point.

It is easy.

1- disconnect battery
2- remove intake
3- replace alternator.

Yep, still under warranty. I definitely wouldn't expect any problems due to the redline, but that's kind of what I was looking for, whether the dealer would throw that crap at me. I'll just have to bring it up with Chris if I get lip
