It was a beautiful Sunday morning and I was chasing my dad's M5 uphill. I think I was in 4th gear and had my eye glued on the tach and at around 7500RPMs a yellow Service Engine Soon light turned on. It almost felt like I hit the rev limiter although I'm pretty sure I didn't as I was watching the RPMs closely.
I eased off the accelerator and the car lost alot of power and I heard a creaking noise. I slowed down to pull over and the car stalled. I restarted the engine and everything turned on fine. The SES light turned off. I drove slowly and had about 15 miles more before I got home. The car drove fine the rest of the way, with normal acceleration at all ranges. I did not push it hard of course and did not go into the high RPM range. 2-3 months ago I had Inspection II, fluids changed and topped off, replacement of oil pan, fuel tank sensors, and a couple of other items. I'm very finicky about keeping it in perfect maintenace. I don't beat on my car but I do like to drive it hard on occasion in the open road. Any idea what happened? It seems to be driving fine but should I be concerned? My only peformance mods are SE Panel filter and DA Street software.

could be a faulty catalytic converter
you should get the car read at autozone and see if anything pops up. also could be a busted MAF sensor. SES lights could be....anything. |

Lets just slap an ///M badge on everything....

SES light means something is wrong. Maybe not drastically, but something happened and the code would be stored. You'll never know what's up until you get the codes read, until then it's just speculation. I'd get it checked out just to be on the safe side. |

last time this happened to me i think it was my alternator that was going. very cheap to get that checked out. it was very wierd because i didnt get a battery light. 1 or 2 weeks later that light came on. for some reasons at high rpms it was drawing current from the battery and not the alternator.

I've never taken my car to Autozone type place. Do I ask them to have error codes read? Is this OBDII? How much should that cost? Sorry for the ignorance, I am not very mechanically inclined.

I'm not sure about elsewhere in the country, but the Autozone's in California don't rent out OBDII scanners anymore.

Considering that you have aftermarket software it's possible the MAF voltage limit may have been reached or the 1 of the O2 Sensors was fouled. Like everyone says get the code read, regardless the error will be logged and you'll know exactly what happened.

Find a Indy Shop with a GT1 (Group Test) diagnostic scanner, or an Autologic GT2 device. Using this scanner/diagnostic device is the only reliable way of reading the DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) stored in the ECU. Obviously the ECU detected **something** and shut down the fun to preserve the engine. Spend the $ and do this right, but then again, it is your car to gamble with any way you see fit...
