Default smg issue

I have a 2002 smg m3 i have had the car for about 8 months now every thing has been awesome. In the last few days every once in a while when i shift not every time it shifts and engages but kinda hesitates to finally fully engage. Could it be the clutch or what?

Are you saying that it disengages and the gear light flashes for longer than you're expecting? I hate to say it, but that sort of sounds like an SMG pump (i.e. low pressure), or maybe an actuator mechanism issue.

Quick translation here. Relais = Relay. The SMG relay is a fairly common failure, and is nice and inexpensive to replace.

i had exactly the same problem.. tried pump, wasnt that, tried software and relay, wasnt that... turned out to be the gear position sensor on the bottom of the box! once new one fitted everything was fine :-) they start to get a bit stiff with old age..

Yep exactly the same! pauses for like 2-3 seconds, gear number light flashing and you have to let off until it engages?

You can fit the sensor yourself but it will need to be programmed in else it wont know it has been replaced, mine was done on autologic!

Real oem - gear identification switch - 23412229792

Hope this helps, loads of people always say pump straight away but I have known it to be this on 5 occasions now!!!

Makes sense. I was one saying "pump", but if there are less expensive options to try, like the relay and the gear position sensor then it definitely makes sense to try those first.
