Plain and simple yes, unless you have a professional dying your seats. I'm no professional, and by my anal standards my seats are no where where I would like them to be at this very moment.

It looks good in pics, but at least based on how my seats were, the color doesn't match perfectly (looks painted), and it peels and fades and just ends up looking worse after a few months. I'd really encourage reupholstering. For those of you with just bolster problems a good upholsterer could easily just do that and not charge you an arm and a leg. If your entire seat is bad, better to buy a clean one from bimmerforums classifieds.

Leather dying is like putting lipstick on a pig. If you cant get the seats recovered you shouldnt be driving the car. I hate to say that so many times but these cars arent cheap to maintain, shortcutting things just devalues the car IMO. If youre a dishonest seller or a hokey used car dealer and you plan to sell the car, spending 150 bucks to get the seats dyed is worth every penny, assuming you dont get the anal guy that can tell when a seat has been dyed (like me!). I dont care how clean a car is, if there was interior dye work I run. period.

I remember looking at a 328is way back (probably in 96) and the car had maybe 30k miles and the drivers side seat literally looked new from when I opened the door, I did some investigating and found a paper towl soaked in brown "stuff" wedged near the seatbelt. I left scratching my head, did some research and found that it had been dyed, I never heard of it till then....funny how things happen.
