Default Formal restaurant recommendations for the San Jose area?

Can any recommend a formal restaurant in the South Bay area? This would be for a birthday. Open to any category of food.... good salads are a plus. I usually go up to SF for this, but I'll be down here for the weekend.

Alexander's is one of my favorite places for steak/prime rib as well. It's delicious, and not too expensive at all.

Manresa blew me away, it's been a long time since I've been there but it was amazing. I had the tasting menu and couldn't stop talking about it for months. Heck, I still talk about it sometimes. $$$$ though.

Arcadia in SJ used to be one of the spots I'd frequent but the quality of the food would change periodically...someone who worked there told me they were changing management. I went there recently but I don't know if the steaks are what they used to be, I didn't order steak.
