this is not true there are 1000's in back end dollars even before dealer rebates

in fact new m3s last month dealerships were getting 8,000 back under invoice.

M6/m6's up to 12,000.

FYI...Dealer invoice is not the actual cost of the car to the dealership. Most people don't know about the trunk money or hold back dollars. Since the dealership is selling a car that will technically sit in their inventory until it is sold, they also get money from the factory built into the car to fund the general advertising and flooring subsidy that they MFG's give back to the dealers based on how long the car is at the dealership. Since they sold it right away, they get all that money. For every day it sits at the dealership, money is "debited" from that "account" to help pay for those costs. This is why dealerships want the sales contract dated as far back as possible.

Also, factory to dealer incentives also lower the "cost" of the car to the dealership. Stictly speaking, the consumer is not entitled to that money, but they dealer will traditionally dip into that money to move the car.

This is all true, but no one other than a dealership knows what those numbers are. So it's easier to know the dealer invoice posted at KBB, Edmunds and deal from that point.
