Default On a tight budget, Opinions Please!

Hey guys and gals. I've had my 2003 M3 SMG for a little over a year now and LOOOOOVE it. My dilemma? I've been reading about fixes and car repair costs and it's got me worried. I recently got married, and was even discussing the "kids" option. I love my monthly payment (got it at a steal) just very concerned about if it breaks. It's at 107k miles right now, everything still good, except for the fact that last summer it gave me a scare with the SMG light coming on. It's been fine this summer, although it's been hot as hell. I've been babying it during the high heat. Aside from that, it's been a great car, but like I said, I'm very worried about something going wrong and not being able to afford the repair costs, as it is out of warranty. I don't know any mechanics around here in Southern Maryland, and heard BMW isn't cheap, even to just pull the car into the bay. Just wanted to get some advice from this fine community.

Get a Bentley E46 repair book and learn how to turn wrenches and you'll save 75% of repair costs right there.

Open a savings acct and add a bit of $ every paycheck for "in case funds."

The only way to stare the repair boogey man in the face is with a wrench in one hand, and a site sponsor's parts catalog in the other.

Any competent shop is a min of $100/hr labor, and will mark up the parts too. Not saying this is you, but open ended complaint's like "my SES light is on", or "it makes a funny sound" can shake the money tree pretty good.

that and look online for parts. places like Tischer and turnermotorsports will give you OEM or better parts without the dealer or shop price. that way if you don't want to do the labor on your own, you can save a good amount on parts when you take it in.

go to the regional section on the forum and ask around and I'm sure someone in your area will direct you to the best local shops around.
