Default 55W HID Upgrade

Hi all,

I currently have OEM Xenon lights in my M3 but want to upgrade to something a little brighter. I have done a bit of research and decided on the bulbs and ballasts that I want.

I have a few questions.

I believe the M3 comes standard with D2S bulbs so I assume it's a direct swap (apart from the mounting of the ballast) if I use the ballast and bulbs linked to above?

Will I need anything further to avoid bulb out errors? The ballasts state they have an integrated can-bus module to avoid errors but they also sell relay harnesses that do the same thing for $30 more. Will I also need these?

I was hoping (with little or no modifications) that I'd be able to use the OEM ballasts and bulbs in my high beam reflector housings. Does anyone know if this is possible or am I better off getting an additional HID kit for the high beams?

Thanks all for your help. I did search on multiple forums but couldn't really find any answers.

Personally I would stick with the factory philips bulbs, and just upgrade the ballasts if anything.

If you have the factory single xenon lights, the ballasts is all that you need.

You can pick up the kit from our site, or if you want the ballasts alone you can pick that up too.

Thanks for the quick response. I was also after the 6,000k colour temp. I want around 5,000k but have read that the higher Wattage results in a warmer colour temp.

I assume I would order the 55W, 6,000k, D2S and no harness?

Are these Morimoto 55W bulbs the same as the ones I linked to from TRS?

Thanks for your help with this

Will running a 55W as opposed to the stock 35W result in anything melting due to the increased (i'm assuming) heat output?

Philips DL50 or go home

wouldn't suggest running 50w bulbs in our all-plastic housings. why not do a ZKW lens swap and run some fresh philips 85122+ or the osram 66240's? big difference if your current bulbs have a lot of hours on them

DL50's are 55W aren't they? I was kind of hoping for something a little cooler (5000 - 6000k) are there any really good 5000 / 6000k 55W bulbs or am I wasting my time?

Is there a real risk of melting the housings when they were built for 35W HIDS to begin with? I thought a tonne of guys modded the standard ballasts to get the equivalent of 55W output.

Assuming there are no alternatives to the DL50 am I best off getting DL50's and the Morimoto 55W Ballasts?

I need to do a bit more research on the lens swap. I don't mind swapping lenses but don't want to have to do big modifications to the headlights.

Yes no harness would be required. Product is the same exact as the TRS. Youll get the most for your money if you stick with the OEM Bulbs and just upgrade the ballasts. 6000K really cuts down the performance.
