I wonder how much of the firewall had to be trimmed out to fit the motor/tranny? I assume that you'd have to fabricate alot of subframe work to make the swap as well as retain driveability....

I've been reading a lot about this lately and you don't need to trim the firewall at all. For a s85 engine you need crossmember modification Engine mount fab new trany mounts Mozda streeing shaft ..ect. But the v10 and the e90 gearbox will fit. It's just the know how and $$$

the s85 swap has been documented fairly well by the drift culture guys. the s65 on the other hand has been somewhat of a "secret". i've searched and haven't found any good, detailed write ups. off the top of my head the biggest is the oil pan [sits in front of the crossmember in the e39 while the one on the s54 sits behind it]. only solutions i've read that worked are getting an Alpina oil pan [$$$ and they won't give you one unless you give them an Alpina VIN], or a dry sump kit from VAC [also $$$]. I read somewhere the ECU shouldn't be a big challenge because the s54/65 share basically the same one....or something like that although, the guy in the video is using an e9x cluster. so who knows

Well I have found that you don't need the crosworth ecu. That a number of ppl have use factory ecu. I've even found E30 v10 where they say they are using factory ecu.
http://www.apexspeedtech.com/ These guys say they can do it with the factory ecu.
