Default Warranty and service bulletins

If your car is out of warranty and a problem arises that is covered in an SIB, do you have to pay to have the repair work done??

A buddy of mine had a failure of one of his ignition coils and had all of them replaced under warranty as the SIB specified. If my 02 (out of warranty) suffers the same problem will I have to replace all six out of pocket, or would I just have the affected coil replaced on my dime? They wouldn't take care of it under the 6/100k engine warranty would they?? :nixweiss:

If it's a RECALL, then the work is done under warranty. If it is simply a bulletin, you would pay out of pocket.

As for the specific issue of the ignition coils, I do believe that is covered under your 6yr/100k engine warranty as they are part of the engine.

I would be surprised if that was the case. I thought the 6/100k engine warranty covers only oil lubricated parts. I'd be hard pressed to argue that the ignition coil is an oil lubricated part.

You're right. I asked the dealer about checking to see if my car is leaking oil, and if it is, would that be covered under the 6/100k....
They said no, only moving lubed engine parts.
Fcukers...you would think regarding oil leaks they would want to take care of that...

We actually got a "Recall" letter from BMW for the coils in my wife's '03 325i. It stated something about California Emissions basis for the Recall. This may not apply in all states but in CA almost every 3 series model incl M3 was Recalled. Since the coil is a emissions related component (according to the Recall I got) I would think you could get them to cover it under the emissions warranty period (6 or 8 years I think)? Good luck!

Hey.

Any luck on that coil replacement? I'm afraid I'm having the same situation. Whenever I pull out with load at rpms under 2k I get misfiring at most any gear although it is most prominent in 1st. Did you have any luck getting this replaced?

Check out this thread...

if your car fits under the certain years, yes, the dealer will replace all free of charge. My coils are going bad however they will not change them because my VIN# does not indicate the TSB.
