Default burning smell

i get a burning smell from my rear left wheel, the intensity of the smell grows the longer i drive.....its been like that since i bought the car recently...........furtheremore i hear a low growling/grinding sound coming from the left rear at low speeds

any thoughts? they could be related or 2 seperate problems...

I had this same problem on my 93 318i, it turned out to be a shot wheel bearing if I remember correctly, you need to get that replaced ASAP because its causing damage more and more you drive!!! I could be wrong though, but from what you describe I am pretty sure that is the problem.

That would be my first guess too. Get it figured out so you aren't left stranded somewhere!

Yep, I vote for bearing as well - get it sorted ASAP for the reasons above.

Only other think I can think of is that your handbrake balance is way out and the left side is sticking - similar symptoms.

EMMM I had a little of that smell also, but it was faint. I believe its the smell coming from the bearings. Metal grinding metal smokes and leaves a smell similair to burning rubber. I believe if you get your wheel bearing replaced you wont smell rubber anymore. I feel like a pro at this problem because my mechanic went over it with me in detail, I was too skeptical to replace it myself. Get that thing fixed before it throws everything off

There are also grease seals, made of rubber, next to the bearings.
