Default E36 M3 as a track car....

Hello,
this is my first post in this section. I usually post in the E46 section as it's my daily driver.
I'm on the edge of buying a 4-door E36 M3 (286hp 3.0 version) for track use. It has around 100K km (~62K miles) on the clocks and is from 02/95. I don't want to ruin the car (only 4000 units made), so my question in fact is, will I have a great fun track day car with these mods:
- Brembo big brake kit
- KW variante 2
- front strutbar
- thicker antroll bars front and rear
- Engine and Software work which will bring the power to 330hp

Give me your opinions, please.

These are the pics of the car:

if you get it for nothing, I'd say go for it. Doesn't seem well cared for, but it's a track car, so not extremely important.

Buying blind is extremely risky, so leave $3-4K of room in your purchase price for initial maintenance (before mods), and assume the "75K list" has not been done.

Good luck

Hi there,

Most in this section are in the US, and we never got a 4 door 3.0. nor did we get the euro version of the 3.0. that being said, i can't really comment on your hp numbers. but that seems like alot for only software.

in terms of using it as a track car, the 4 door is very rigid and the modifications you mention will improve handling/braking, but i think that you will find that the car is quite competant as it is and unless you are quite an experienced driver, the car will be able to outdrive you in stock form.

Thank for a quick reply, guys.
@VaderHonk: can you tell me why you think the car has not been taken well care off ? Because although according to the seller, the car belongs to a sister of an BMW mechanic who did all the maintenance himself. The car goes very cheap, around US$8000 so it's tempting.

Thanks for the input. I appreciate it...

Oh, and what is the 75K list ?

PS: 330hp is with engin work aswell, not only SW.

i am not sure about cars in your market, but the price does sound quite good.

the 75k list is BMW's Inspection II. do a search for the complete list of components that are inspected/changed.

As for my other comment. When someone puts their car up for sale w/out even bothering to wash it, I assume they don't care too deeply about it. I know I may be jumping to conclusion, but I imagine that in most cases I would be correct.

The engine bay is dirty as sh!t, the wheels are covered in brake dust, and the interior is filthy. That says a lot about the owner, and from that I'll "assume" that the car hasn't been well taken care of.

Would you ever post or email pics of your car w/out it looking it's best?

looks like 1 day since a washing for a Black car to me. Might be quite a deal if it checks out , and certainly fun on the track. Hopefully SGM3 has some track prep tips for you.
