Default Factory Vs. 3rd Party Warranty

Hello All

I just bought a 2002 M3 about 3 weeks ago. I have 1500 miles left on the factory warranty. The caw was not bought at a bmw dealer.

My question, Can you still apply for a factory bmw extended warranty till 100k? Can you tie in the maintenance plan allong with it? and if not, what extended warrany companies have you had good and bad experiences with. Also will some of these 3rd party companies cover smg tranny's and smg pumps?

Thanks Guys!

Can't apply for the BMW warranty because you're not the original owner but you can add the maintenance plan.

Actually - since it's an 02 - which came with 36months/36,000 miles maintenance - you also can't apply for the extended maintenance. That has to be done while the original maintenance is still in effect.

actualy I had my key checked at the dealer, and I have the 50K warranty which is good till August or 50K. Something the old owner did I guess.

Must have extended the maintenance.

Just so I know we're talking about the same thing:

Warranty - fixes things that break due to a "defect"

Maintenance - fixes/adjusts/replaces certain items that normally wear, like brakes, oil, valve adjustments, etc.

The two are very different. The factory warranty on the '02 is 4 years/50,000 miles. The factory maintenance is 3 years/36,000 miles. IF the former owner extended the maintenance (there was an extension available to take it to 4/50) - then you can still extend it again, as long as you do it while it's under warranty. This is one of the few maintenance extensions I'd say is worthwhile since a Service-II is going to cost about as much as the extension, and the Service-II pops up around 50k miles on an M3.

Best,

Dude you have made my day, that valve adjustment thing was something I was hoping that was covered. Im going back to my dealership this week to figure out if I can extend the maintenance plan. I figure a brake job will run me more than half of what the maintenance plan costs alone. Hopefully I can still get it. Thanks for the info!

The valve adjustment is supposed to be done at EVERY inspection (Inspection-I and II). People have reported dealers not doing it - with them saying "It sounded OK.." - don't take that. It's BS. It's part of the inspection and should be done. If you don't see a listing of a profile gasket, and 6 other gaskets (and sometimes 15 more) - they didn't do it... Go back and tell them you expect it to be done, and if it isn't - you'll call BMW-NA and ask if they changed the service schedule.

No problem. If you're still under the one the former owner extended - you can get it for sure.

If a warranty is what you want, I inquired with my dealer. I too am not the original owner so I cannot extend with BMW. But, the delaer recommended a GE warranty. It is around 4K which is what the BMW warranty would cost also, but it covers more, he showed me both the documentations. It is also cheaper than the BMW one so I know he wasn't tryig to sell a more expensive warranty. I have heard form many people who own non-BMWs who have recommended the GE warranty.
