Lots of good info. I'm looking for something to hold up to HPDE and still be reasonable on the street.

From everything I read (and I read a lot), it seems like the Axxis Ultimates / PBR ULTs are the way to go for street AutoX. And while they might hold up to light track work, they're *not* track pads.

Mr. E is right-- if you get into HPDE at all, you're going to be best served using two sets of pads... There are some that work on both, but it's a compromise (see: All-Season Tires).

I'm not willing to compromise ANY safety on the street-- I need something that bites NOW, regardless of temp. And compromising on the track doesn't make a lot of sense to me either (espeicially after investigating more about how and why brake fade happens after I read about C&D's recent escapade crashing a 370Z into the wall at VIR)... Why pick up something you know is going to fade or disintegrate under track use?

Exactly

I went out for one session on Hawk HP Plus pads which are an agressive street pad (I still don't like them though) and never will I go out with street pads again. Its not that I'm saying street pads don't belong on the track but for someone with track experience that has been using track pads for a while, those street pads honestly scared the crap out of me becuase I felt like they weren't predictable and weren't up to the task of hauling the car down in a very short distance.

For a first track event though, good street pads are a better way to go and your instructor will guide you accordlingly

Good point. And the first place I'm likely to do a HPDE will be down at Gateway in St. Louis. I'd feel comfortable using a good street pad there since it's basically a glorified AutoX course-- only one straight once you get out on the oval and even then, my stock ///M will probably just be hitting the low triple digits before having to brake.

For something like that (especially as a 1st timer with an instructor in the car), upgraded street pads shouldn't be an issue. For more serious track use, though, you'll want a real track pad...

I did have track pads my first HPDE and I was breaking later but I definitely wasn't taking advantage of what the pad could really do (and I'm even still learning). I would have been just fine without them though.
First track day is all just meant to be taken in, no need to go crazy preparing (that comes later )

Usually I'm pretty good about that. I'm feeling really tired at the moment though. Running in the morning then sitting at a desk most of the day screws with me I guess.

For what it's worth, I installed PFC-Zs in October and have 4 days on them at Summit Point Main and I haven't had any problems with them, no fade with my driving style. Low dust, but the initial bite is quite a bit less than what I had on the Axxis Ultimates and that took a little getting used to on the street. If I get the opportunity to do more track events next year I'll probably step up to a dedicated track pad to avoid the compromise.
