Highway 8 to Glenmore then Crowchild north to Bow trail. Travel to the heart of downtown every morning. Then sit in traffic for an hour+ on my way home.

23K miles w/o any problems, knock on wood. I do feel when the tranny adapts between driving hard and babying it. If you're always on the gas, the shifts are clean anywhere on the RPM range and gears. But baby it and the shifts could be slow with some slipping even in S5. My car has always behaved like that from day one and I have no problems with it.

That's one hell of a commute. No wonder your SMG keeps slipping. Plus all the construction you're driving through doesn't help.

had the service tech run his computer magic last night and the car is as good as new. Software is a tricky thing with these smart cars. Lovin' the M3 again. Thanks for all the input guys.

I'll ask and see if he'll tell. Luckily the car took the upload, as I mentioned before, some of the cars will take the new data, and other's won't.

I'll keep you posted if I can get some info from BMW.

I was just chatting with a friend about the SMG and clutch... I have a couple questions...

1) Will driving in S3 when in traffic / driving slow vs. S5 counteract the computer adaptiveness so that when you do go into S5 the shifts will be crisper?

2) Does the slight lifting during shifts really help the clutch wear? I do notice this method is not as smooth as keeping pressure on the accelerator...

3) Will the slower shift modes wear the clutch faster due to slower engagement and disengagement of the gear?

4) Besides the SMG control module, are all the mechanical components of the SMG clutch similar to the manual? I ask as my dealer said the replacement is $3K.

The dealer replaced my clutch at 37k... it was slipping, I tried the double pull, etc.. brought it in, the tech test drove it, and they can back stating the clutch was worn. This was covered under maintenance, but the dealer said "replacement is only offered once under the maintenance plan"... I replied that I have the extended plan to 100k, I expect to be covered under the plan as needed if I need another..., etc... "

Now today I felt for the first time since then a slight slippage, double dip, whatever...this is 10k miles since the replacement. I can't imagine the clutch is worn again... so I want to know ways to counteract the adaptiveness without having to drive it like I stole it...

Thanks

Only happens to me when I have the DSC ON that the car would jerk. When DSC is off under full throttle acceleration, all I do is burn rubber in first and then the tire chirps into 2nd gear and chirps from 2nd to 3rd.
