Lightbulb SMG Bang on 1,2,3 in high RPMs

OK guys,

I am new M3 SMG owner. I am getting used to the SMG. SO far i like a lot and I am so happy I chose it over the manual.

I DID search the forum, there are many SMG related threads, but there is none about what I am going to describe...

:nixweiss:
I have the following question, I am almost sure it is normal, but I wanted to post it here to see other people's opinion.

When up shifting (in S5), if I push it over 6,000 RPM in low gears, I hear a bang at the same time the gear engages and pools your neck backwards. It is not something too loud, i cannot say it is a metallic sound, actually I do not know how to explain it, but i hope you guys know what i mean and share your thoughts about it.

If i shift about 3000 to 5000 RPM there is no such noise, i guess because the torgue is not that big yet... Does this makes sence?...

Does anyone with SMG know what i mean?

Thanks for your thoughts,
Ivan

It's normal. The clutch is basically not being slipped and as a result, you really get a firm upshift. The higher the RPMS, the more firm the shift will be.

If it goes away on S1, S2, or S3 then again, it's normal.

its normal. i used to think the same thing like there was something wrong with the car. try letting the foot off the gas while shifting like a manual, the sound should be less if not non existent.

yeah, yeah, yeah, i was actually trying this and i did feel the difference. I know what you mean by "letting the foot off the gas", not even all the way, just a little seem to be doing it... I felt this tonight when driving home from the Gym...

Thanks a lot!
Ivan

yep that is normal and if you do it very often you will quickly discover that it's normal for the rear tires to wear out 2x as fast as the fronts. Fortunately new tires on these cars aren't too expensive.

Yes it's "normal" but you might find this thread I started useful:

When i bought the car a week ago, it had 13000 miles, both front and rear tires look like new to me.. i guess this means that tires have been replaced, right?
Is is possible if the original owner was taking it easy on the car and these are the original tires?

thanks,
Ivan

What type of effect do these hard S5 shifts have on the life of the clutch? What about other drivetrain parts?
