Default Oil dipstick marks...

Does anyone know how much oil you need to bring the oil level from the bottom mark to the top mark on the dipstick?

Default According to page 122 in the manual

"The oil volume between the two marks
on the dipstick corresponds to approx.
1.4 US quarts/1.3 liters."

I believe it is supposed to be in the middle. Basically those lines are min and max marks.

I don't know about that. According to the mad russian site 6 liters (which the S54 calls for) fills it up to the top mark on the dipstick.

Now do you guys have any tricks for actually seeing where the oil is? When I change oil (in any motor) I have a very difficult time seeing where it is because it is pretty clear. The best I came up with was pressing it on a paper towel.

I would never have my oil at a level where it's in the midde of the stick. I think right on the top line is ideal, but never over it.

In the middle would mean you are low. I would not recommend that advice to anyone. Your oil should be close to the top line but not over. You should check your oil level every other full tank of gas to insure you are running a safe amount at all times.

Always check your oil prior to an aggressive drive or event. Lastly, carry 1 bottle of Castrol TWS with you in case you are low. This oil is very hard to find outside of a dealer, so it is a good idea to carry one with you at all times. The dealer even sells a oil kit with the TWS oil, leak proof bag, etc. all for about $12. It can stay in your trunk.

BMW states it should be in the middle...

having said that anywhere between the marks is OK...

when adding, add just a little, 1/4 bottle, and check...

the factory fill number is 5.5 liter (bottles) or 5.8 qts

Dipsticks=Dummysticks..

They are not all that accurate and vary between cars.. I know that sounds crazy but its true..

Here is how I do all my cars..

I change the oil and put "ONE" less quart in the car, I start it up and let it run for a little and then let it sit for a minute.. I mark the dummystick then add the other quart and mark that line.. It will now show you if its a quart or so less and where YOU SHOULD BE with the other mark..

and never put in 6 liters of oil at an oil change. 5.5L, drive and then check before adding more.
