I know very well that the gas lid will open when you press it while it's locked and unlock it. I love how many of the M3_forum guys are so quick to assume without knowing all of the details and burn that member.

I've never touched the damn gas lid when it was locked (I never touched it at all). About one out of every six times of locking and unlocking the car, it will pop open.

Default Question and possible Answer

M3_POWER:

Does the filler door pop open by a large amount, or just a little bit? I had an issue on my 2002 M3 where the filler door would open by a little bit, and would not properly close. I solved it by putting some lube on the filler door hinge-spring.

Alternatively, the spring popper (covered by a rubber grommet) aft of the fuel filler pipe may be the culprit.

Hope this helps
Glenn

any idea how to fix the door if it wont stay closed when the car is unlocked, it wants to flap around until I get it to 30mph or so which presses it tight to body. Dealer said I need complete assembly which requires a new door and painting.. bs I say.. any help on this one..

It is possible that someone has leaned against your car, pressing against the gas lid. This would cause the lid to pop open when you unlock your car. Where do you park your car? Does is have a lot of 90 degree or diagonal parking?

Hope you guys had a good laugh, because I'm laughing at you guys who blamed the problem on user error; which is obviously not the case.

I was thinking the same, but it has never happened before until recently (daily now as a matter of fact). Unless someone is trying to siphons my gas everyday, I highly doubt it.
