it turns out that i drive smoother in sport mode, so i was wondering if there was anything wrong with driving in sport mode all the time. are there any downsides?

No, all it does is change the throttle mapping. There should not be any adverse side effects from driving and shifting at reasonable RPM. If you're more tempted to redline with every shift, then I'm sure you're decreasing the lifetime of your engine.
