I read somwhere, can't remember where though, that they might make an M1. I'm really excited to see what that would like and how that would perform, even though it might "conflict" with the E92 M3. But BMW needs to be careful and not do what Porsche did with the Cayman S and 997 (regular Carrera) performance wise.

Also might have a possible name problem with the original M1.

I don't know how they could make an M1, unless the put the M3's V8 in there. If they put an S54 or other NA I6 in it, the bi-turbo I6 135i would blow it out of the water with $1k in mods.

Now the E92 V8 in a 1 series with carbon fiber roof, LSD and aggressive gearing...now we're talking. But that would definitely steal M3 sales, so 135i makes sense. I think the 135i is basically the M1.

Base for base, the 135i is about half the price of the E92 M3. But with $1300, the 135i will be just as fast or faster than the M3 and have more torque than the M5/M6

yes, it will be fast for those that just want a very light fast car and nothing else. The M3 delivers more. And don't forget that, with some money, you will be able to mod the M3 (yes it will cost more) but that V8 has LOT more potential. It won't be long before you start seeing 500hp+ M3's out there with supercharger or TT setups.
In any case, what will be the redline for this marvelous so easily modified plug and play engine? And how much do we trust this plug and play. The car will have a lot of HP and torque, sure, but don't forget the M will be able to go to 8500 before having to shift. That's a lot more time in the power band for the M3.

I think the 135i is essentially the "M1," much as the X5 4.8is is the MX5...

Good points as far as the 135i redline/powerband, and the reliability will be a big issue. Can the N54 handle the 4-5lbs. extra boost on stock turbos? Supposedly there have been no issues so far, and some have been running the upgrade for 6 months+ on their 335s. Obviously the M3 will be more practical and reliable (hopefully) but bang for the buck, the 135i is going to be awesome. There will be a big aftermarket for them just like the E36s, and lots of people will be tuning them. Should be fun. I'll have to see it in person/drive it before I decide if I want one, or maybe an E46 M3/E39 M5.

And of course you can mod the E92 M3. You can mod anything. But NA power is much harder to come by than FI power, and it's also usually more expensive or the same price for less HP. It's going to cost at least $10k just to get to 500hp with the E92 M3, and I don't think you could get to 500hp without FI. We shall see though.

I don't know how big the brakes are on the 135i coupe. As we know,it will be six pistons upfront and two in the back. If they are big enough and compatible with the M3, wouldn't it be funny if people start putting 135 brakes on the M3?

Youtube has some great videos of the 135i coupe. For some reason it's more appealing than the new M3...
