Default BMW GT1 diagnostic systems being sold on eBay, are they for real to put in dyno mode?

Did a search on eBay for "bmw gt1", and got several folks selling, what i thought was ~$40 K GT1 systems, for about $3 K.

http://motors.search.ebay.com/bmw-gt...fsooZ1QQfsopZ1

Are those legit BMW GT1's?

Listed GT1's on eBay are all described as BMW GT1 Diagnostic System that comes with a laptop.

So are these GT1's that folks talk about that can be used to enable dyno mode by going into, "service functions section and selecting the operate on roller dynometer option" ???

Or the *real* GT1 that puts the car in dyno mode, costs far more ???

Stay away from those. Those GT1 units are clones
The real GT1's were made in Germany by Siemens, which are now out-of-production.
Those GT1's sold on Ebay are most likely Chinese clones.

You've been warned.

those ones work fine ; usually they don't sell for 3K and will bounce up to the 6K mark or more. The cost isn't the laptop itself but the yellow multiplexer is the most expensive part. Be wary of who you buy from because alot of the auctions only include one or the other.

Just to revive this thread.. I contacted a seller to see if he would let me use his if I paid him for the time it took (1/2 hour based on dealer rates). The seller name was zindex0 and this is the auction.

He agreed to let me come by his shop (He's local to me!) to use it, free of charge , if I passed referrals to him or brought in other customers. I've never used one before, but would appreciate any input those of you have to give. I'll be installing my alarm system in the upcoming weeks and would like to change a few other things about the car's behaviour as well, including the parking mirror function, auto roll-up for main windows and sunroof, and auto-locking options.

Is this a fantastic opportunity or am I in way over my head?

I'd take him up on it. It looks like the real deal to me.. BMW will sell these to private parties, or to private garages - $15,000, NO support whatsoever. They are doing this because of the movement by independent garages to have legislation passed requiring manufacturers to provide all the equipment, tools and materials used to repair their cars to independent garages.

The GT1 is being replaced by BMW with a newer central-server based system using WiFi links to the cars - so I expect a lot of these are coming out of dealerships and will appear on the used market.

Yeah, isn't this the ISIS system?

I believe I'll also need a very good battery charger to ensure that the voltage level to the DME does not drop, or there's a risk of programming error. Anyone know of a source for instructions on the GT1? I think the guy selling it, by the sound of his tone on the phone, is quite clueless. He says he has a garage, but did not sound so convincing as to how the GT1 operates. I'd be very surprised if it is an actual BMW unit, and not just a Chinois knock-off.

That doesnt look anything like the GT1 my dealer uses. The one they use has a flat panel touch screen and plugs into the cigarette adapter for power.. Regardless if it works, it works..

It's definitely not. This is the portable system reconstructed from parts, if I understand correctly.

Essentially, the kit the seller is offering is the round-style plug, the rectangular-style plug, and the adapter, which probably plugs into a parallel port on the host computer, which seems to be that IBM ThinkPad which is also included.

One could also use the BMW TIS system, with a passthruXS adapter (~850 Euros, IIRC), but it has limited capabilities compared to the GT1 and requires a subscription to www.bmwtis.com.
