The M Coupe chassis has its shortcomings but can easily be remedied with a quality set of coilovers, subframe bushings, etc. Were your M Coupes left stock or were they modified? I love all M Coupes and regular Z3 Coupes but for me, the powerplant is the car's heart and soul. Sorry to say but the US-S52 is not a true M engine, rather a warmed over M52. But you knew this =) |

With either car you will need subframe reinforcement

if I had the money at the time... I would have bought an s54 and never looked back
but for what I use my car for, an s52 will suit me just fine for the rest of my life

The 01-02 MZ3 S54 Coupe isn't exactly plentiful... only 690 made it here. There's a MUCH more active MZ3/Z3 community over on bimmerforums that could help you out. Very tight, friendly group.

I currently have an '01, and in the past owned a '99. I much prefer the powerband on the '01 - when it comes on at about 4K RPM it's simply a wonderful feel and sound. As far as reliability - never had ANY problems except a drippy rear-window washer and a fuel-level sensor failure on the '99, and so far - NO problems at all with the '01 (they seem to have incorporated Ron Styger's fix for the drippy washer nozzle in the later models - there was even a SIB issued for the early ones.)
Great car - it's more fun then the M3 to drive for sure.. (and it's holding it's value quite nicely, unlike the M3..)
