Default Royal Purple for the Diff ?

After reading through the other threads, I'm going to RP synchromax in my SMG. Now for the (brace yourself) for the dumb question. Is the Diff product "Max-Gear" and is it recommended vs. OEM fluid? How many quarts do I need ? Yes, I'm too lazy to look it up, so go ahead and tell me to rtm.

Personally I stick with OEM in the diff. It's a very specific design and I feel as if BMW knows best on this one.

I have it in my diff as well as tranny. Tranny fluid has been in for 40k miles and diff fluid for 12-15k miles. No noises, runs fine.

If you go the RP route, there are two RP diff fluids, make sure to get the right one. I found it by searching here (pretty sure it's max gear though).

Nothing wrong with Royal Purple... But I don't put it in my BMW... I save it for my Camaro!

The BMW, I just put the OEM fluid in...

Well...I finally got off my virtual ass and read every post on Royal Purple. Obviously this has been hotly debated and I will self terminate my thread. Ok, and if my diff blows when I go to RP.....I'll let everyone know

Why wouldn't you just use OEM.

OEM = no problems

After market fluids = big gamble to save a few dollars.

I purchased 3 sealed / new bottles of OEM diff fluid on ebay for $63 shipped opposed to ~$140 at the stealer.

THE RP for the tranny works nicely. I guess it doesn't work the same for the diff.

I ended up going with OEM at $33.00 a quart from the stealer, so thanks for the advice. On the bright side my indy charged me $120.00 to do the seal, vs. $440.00 stealer. Pirates I tell ya.

I disagree. For example, look at the motor oil that is absolutely recommended for the M3 - it is made by Castrol, an aftermarket brand, rather than BMW motor oil.

I replaced tranny fluid w/ RP synchromax. Smooth as butter.
