No problem, First, you need to download a couple of applications first. (these are not the only ones you can use, its the ones I use, that’s all).

imgburn: http://www.imgburn.com/
UltraIso: http://www.ezbsystems.com/ultraiso/

To mod the splash screen you need this app.
Navtweak: http://rapidshare.com/files/8925524/navtweak.zip.html

You will need to extract the navboot file from the v31.nrg file and save back (the new image) to a v31.iso file (ready for cd burning)

Install UltraIso,
Then run UtraIso
File, Open "v31.nrg "
Navigate to "V-2/RR/0101/BMWC01S/app_sw" in the now open image.
Drag and drop the navboot out of the image onto desktop (or sub-dir)
Open navtweak
File, Open "navboot"
Select the 2nd tab (images)

For sky select romicons #8 and right click replace, (with your choice)
For splash seletct rombitmaps #14 and right click replace, (with your choice)
For 3d icons rombitmaps select rombitmaps (you get the idea)

Then save the navboot (keep a copy of the original safe).

Then drag and drop into the open UltraIso session (back where you found it, "V-2/RR/0101/BMWC01S/app_sw").

The nav unit doesn't allow it to "update" with the same software as already installed.
So you have to fake the SoftwareVersion.
do the following: also extract the 2 .tbl files from the directory:
<drive>:\V_2\RR\0101\BMWC01S
Open it in an HEX editor (like Freeware, PSPad http://www.pspad.com/en/)

In the first line you find: 30 39 31 30 This means: 0800 So: Software-Version 08.00 Just edit the last 30 to 31 and you nav unit will think it's a new Software Version and you can update your V31 without prior downgrade to V29 (v29 and v30 were the same)

The next time you update, you can edit it back to 0800 then 0801 again...

Save the UltraIso image as v31.iso, then burn a cd ad 1x speed.

Thats it.

OR

I've uploaded a copy of my modded image, so you can download it and burn to a blank. (at your own risk).

Link: http://tinyurl.com/3ro675

Remember to follow the correct update procedure and you should have no problems.

Here is the problem with the customizing the icons and such.....

If they can't DL the ISO, burn it to CD, put it into the Nav drive and follow the onscreen instructions, I don't they are likely going to be able to do the file edits to get the custom icons.

If I have time this weekend I may go and make the ISO with the custom icons, new sky and splash screen and post it up somewhere....if I have time.

FYI, the sky only shows up in prespective mode and in that mode you do not get street names.

Agreed, that's why I uploaded my image with the mods already done, all one needs to do is download it, unzip it and burn it (at slowest speed rated for the disc).

Correct, no small street names, but for me no big deal, also the modded pointers are for perspective mode only.

I don't see the point of 2d mode when 3d perspective mode is an option, but that's just me I suppose.

Bummer there are no street names, but I would be able to change the view modes correct? I think I am going to try this this weekend.

Correct, you can change the view at any time.

Only the major street names are shown in 3d mode, this is due to the amount of room required when the Nav computer draws the map in the display so smaller roads names are not shown.

Good luck with the update BTW.

you're in the UK obviously, so you prob wouldn't have the latest map image, but do you know if its possible to copy them or are they write protected?

Not a 2008 no, the only one I have is the 2007, I used it to work out the format for adding speed cameras, so I haven't tried looking for a 2008.

Yes possible, no, not write protected.

They are copywrite protected though.....

FYI:

The prespective mode has to be enable in the Nav's service menus. The perspective mode will not show up in the "Map Position" menu until it is enabled through the service menu.

3D Perspective Mode. The latest version of the BMW MKIV firmware allows for 3D map viewing via a hidden menu item. To turn on perspective mode, from the main menu of your navigation screen select "settings", then press and hold the MENU button for 8 seconds. Using the left scroll button scroll down to Perspective and turn on."
