Can anybody elaborate on this a bit? Is this catch can needed? If I don't have it what can occur?

Is this because the VF supercharger releases a bit of oil every now and then and when it does there is a small chance of this going into the intake--> engine? Is this to keep our engine compartment clean from oil that is released?

No, it's not because of the supercharger. Although the supercharger doesn't "help" the issue.

Normally, there is a small crossover tube that goes from the motor side to the intake plenum. This recovery tube sends oil vapor up, and recycles it, back into the engine (through the intake plenum, which goes through the throttle bodies).

Sludge and condensation are not great for throttle bodies, as you know, so the catch can actually "intercepts" this vapor, "catching" the sludge and condensation, before it gets put back into the engine (thus, clean, sludge-free vapor).

Great looking piece.

Got mine today, with 1/2" hose fittings.

Looking through the drip holes, some sort of filtering element that probably is doing what Ben Liaw points about, which is that filtering element is intercepting from the oil vapor, the sludge and condensation, before going back out to the throttle bodies, and when it does, it's a cleaner vapor.

And here's a size comparison with the ProVent. You can practically fit the Elite Engineering's catch can into ProVent.

Because ProVent is frickin HUGE, and we couldn't find a "nice" home for it.

The Elite Engineering's oil catch can will work, and it's being fitted now at the shop, along with some other goodies, including testing for the n2o (starting at ~50 shot).

Installed.

Can you spot it?

Oh, and no smell from the catch can, yet.

Done, and out of the way.

Nice job!

You're not going to get any smell from the catch can. If you do, you've got issues with the system because it is no longer sealed.
