Default Motorsports Park Hastings, NE review

Well, went out there this past weekend. It's about 430 miles from my house, so I hitched up the tire trailer and off I went.

This is really in the middle of po-dunk Nebraska, nothing there except farms, Super Walmart (of course) and a few other things.

The track is only a few years old, pavement is nice and smooth. No elevation changes in the track at all, totally flat. Unfortunately they grow alfalfa in the infield of the track and it's high enough that it totally obscures your sightline of the track!

So visibility sucks. Combine that with a new track that has NO features to use as landmarks means you get to memorize the track and your first session or tow you wander around like you're lost.

Compounding that was the fact that it rained all day saturday. I left my street tires and brake pads on and went out and had a good time. Sunday was sunny and warm and I was able to have some fun.

The track is tight and technical, not alot of straightaways. The back straight has a large kink in it, big enough that you have to brake going into it. Then it's a bunch of single arc double turns, another little kink, an S turn, then a short front straight, leading into a kink, then a carousel that leads onto the back straight.

If you got down around a 1:45, that was pretty good.

Facilities are nice, with on site showers, flushing toilets, concessions and condos that you can buy. No shade though, so bring a canopy or have a friend with a trailer/motorhome.

I had a great time and I'm glad I went, as I'd never been there before. Several new tracks are supposed to open within a 1-2 hour drive of my house next season, so I don't know if at that point I'd make the trip out there...

Oh, the tire trailer works awesome. All you guys should get one.

I just looked at your profile to make sure you are towing that trailer with an E46 M3. I can't believe it. I've read a number of post over the past year that talk about how nearly impossible it is to get hitch on our cars. Mind posting some pictures and technical info on how you did it?..I'm dying to use one. Thanks.

Well, a friend of mine and I custom fabricated the tow hitch. I've made posts here on this track forum about it and included pics. Just search under my username and you'll find em...

Yours is similar to another thread that lead me to believe it was not for everyone. When you say, "All you guys should get one," it made it sound like there was something easier out there. Now I know of two people with E46 M3s with trailor hitches.

Still, that was a great job! You've got me thinking about it again.

It's not all that hard, you just need to put the time in and build it. The only other options are to stuff everything in the car, or tow the entire car...

I'm leaning more towards that.

Towing the car is really nice, but it's another layer of stuff. Truck, trailer, place to store them, insurance, etc, etc.

I jam it all in the car. Its a pain sometimes, especially when its time to go back home, but being able to drive the car to and from the events (and not a land-yacht/oil-rig) makes it worth the extra effort. Plus, I dont have money for a tow-vehicle or trailer.

My friend is in the process of figuring out how to tow a motorcycle with his M3 as he wants to start tracking his croch-rocket. I can't wait to see how he pulls that off.

I don't want to ruin the inside of my car with track wheels, etc. Plus it's so much easier to just hitch up the trailer that's already packed with everything I need and drive away.

Your friend will need to fab a tow hitch for his M3, show him my thread...

That's what I do currently as well and it works fine and dandy, but my luck will run out eventually. Eventually I'll be at the track and SOMETHING will happen that will prevent me from driving home. My rule of thumb obviously is to go to events where I *could* put it on someone's trailer, but I do not prefer to rely on them to bail me out because I wasn't adequately prepared. I'm looking out for a better everyday vehicle that I can use as opposed to a dedicated tow truck. I recently sold my 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 5.7L Hemi (6 months ago) but the car was nothing but problems and I was anxious to get rid of it.
