I let it idle for the rich cold start then another few seconds, then take off and keep it below 3K till the arrows around the 1/4 point.

I have wildshield tint instead of #6, I did #1 for a while but seats will wear a bit eventually anyways so I gave up. Also really into #3 and 5, i avoid potholes like its my job.

As for not letting it warm up at idle... I hear that you are supposed to let the engine and the transmission warm up at the same time

No need to warm up your car idling, imho.

Never got into the sunshade thing, i guess once you do you dont go back..
Same here. All the other cars I've owned I've normally warmed up except for the BMWs.
Good tips everyone should live with

that's a good tip about opening the trunk, especially on the early model year ones, thanks.

Carbon buildup sounds reasonable. Not too sure about the engine / tranny warming up at same time though.

Isn't ArtM3 the resident tech expert here? I think he was banned or something a while ago though. It would be nice to get a definitive reason for not warming up at idle.

I do everything except the warmup. That's not recommended.

I haven't been warming mine up by idling, especially here in NC where it only gets down to ~70 or 75 at night these days. I warm up the engine/tranny by driving immediately, but keeping the shifts below 3500rpm until all lights are off of the tach - no WOT until oil temp is up to normal. On a side note, I consider reasonably regular WOT to near redline to be "good" PM in that it flushes out build-up in the motor

One thing I do is keep a beach towel on the floor of the rear seats so that when I go to the gym / flag football / etc I don't get the seats sweaty on the way home. Oh, and I almost always get my girlfriend to drive when we go to the beach (although she's not too keen on it either in her E92 328i)...

yes, its not just your motor that needs to be warmed up, your tranny and diff need to be lubricated as well. bmw says to drive off slowly allowing all fluids to warm up and move around until the car is at operating temp.
also, i think that allowing air flow into the engine bay and through the rad will get the car breathing better. i've had a couple bmw's and driven a bunch and i noticed that they all drive better and sound more solid around the 3000rpm mark. its like the motor will last forever at 3000rpm then at idle.

oh and artm3 has left or taken a break or something. he's president now. lol

But still, nothing sounds absolutely definiitve as to why BMW would specifically state that we should NOT let the car idle to warm-up. Hmmm...
