Unhappy Update

about a week ago we found out the chemotherapy was not going to be effective. so this morning we had to put this awesome dog to rest. she stopped eating completely yesterday. she loved chicken and we knew when she stopped eating chicken that it was pretty much over for her.

she couldnt sleep because the mass in her chest would put pressure on her heart and lungs so bad that she couldnt breathe. i felt so sorry for her in the end. she was such a great dog. she had lost over 10lbs and her ribs were showing really bad the last couple of days. she weighed 70+lbs for her entire dog life and today she weighed only 58lbs. that is about a 15 percent loss in like 3 weeks. rip bailey.

it was actually a bit of relief to see her going to sleep at the end knowing that she was so tired that she could hardly stand up anymore. me and the gf stayed in the room with her for quite a while. the last thing we wanted her to see was us not with her. we probably stayed in there too long and annoying the vet.

sad.. I have been thru it myself. I really feel for you, the last minutes when the vet was shaving her arm to put the IV in I was shaking so much I had to sit down. Then the IV stated and she stopped breathing but her one eye stayed open. I just sat there like wtf do I do now..

thanks for your comment.. she had to have her legs shaved a couple of times since we found out she had it. so that didnt bother us... but we didnt like the fact that the table was almost too small for her to lie comfortably on ...the people at the vet were very nice and let us stay with her for a long time so that helped.

i actually felt the first impact of her not being there anymore. myself and my gf woke up around 0300 hearing noises. normally we would never wake up to noises because we knew she was always looking out. or else we would wake up to her barking or very low growls. we would even sleep with the window open on the first floor in the spring time and have absolutely zero worries. maybe we are just being paranoid but we really miss this dog.

even if we get a new similar dog, it will take years to trust that dog to guard/watch like we did trusted bailey.

best post i have ever read on this thread..

.. the funny thing i was just talking to my gf about this exact issue.. it came true for you.. your post made me laugh as we already have the seperation anxiety, poop eating, crazy beagle that replaced my gf's first dog..

i am afraid we would have two dogs that we need to guard instead of getting a good guard dog like we had...

on another note.. how could a dog this cute be so annoying... lol.. thanks so much for the insight.

My 5 1/2 year old male Rottie died (we had him put to sleep) two weeks ago, it was one of the hardest things I've had to do. He developed bone cancer in one leg. It was diagnosed in early July, they gave him 4 to 6 weeks before the bone broke, and 3 months to live. He made it a little longer and the bone never broke, he was running in the back yard a week before the end came.

Best dog I ever had.....

I'll say this, the worst thing that could have happened, my wife brought home a pup about three weeks before the end. I was pissed about that, and didn't think it was fair to him because the puppy is "so cute" and she and the kids paid alot of attention to the puppy and not him. My wife was better about it than the kids, and I spent tons of time with him. The only thing, my wife did save the puppy from the pound, so we looked at it as saving the life of one when the other's was cut short.

If you can, I think I'd hold off getting another dog until this one is gone. And even then, I didn't want to get one right away, because no dog could replace the one I lost.

But Indy sure lived like a King, even up until the night before. He dined his last week on steak, beef stew and we learned he really liked chocolate chip oatmeal cookies. He ate Frosty Paws (dog ice cream) and also learned he liked kool whip!

Enjoy the time with your dog. We decided to not do chemo because the chances of recovery were extremely small and we saw a dog on chemo, wasn't too pretty, poor thing looked miserable.

EDIT: Sorry, just saw the later post, my sympathy goes out to you. And I understand what you mean about another dog, its why I really didn't want to get another one right away.
