Default For You CA Folks: Question About FI, Smog Check & Being A New CA Resident

Well I just found out that Uncle Sam (aka the Navy) will be shipping me out to San Diego for at least 2 years. If my E46 makes the trip (i.e. it does not sell), I was wondering if there were any waivers, exemptions, time extensions, etc for getting my car smog checked either because I am military or because the car is relatively new (2005 model year) or both.

I know VF is still working on the long process of CARB approval for Stage I, which would make this all a moot point if complete. However, I wanted to start learning about what I may (or may not) have to do regarding smog check.

Or just don't become a Cali resident. Since you're in the military, you can keep your car registered out of state without a problem. Then you don't need to bother with the Cali smog stuff.

That is what I would like to do, but I had heard that CA was real strict about registering cars there if you live there, even for military.

If you keep your state of residence as Virginia you won't have an issue. That way you just keep the car registered in Virginia and it is legal because you are military. That way you will never have to register it in CA and never have to deal with CARB.

Congrats on the move. Southern Cali is where "it's at". Now you will be able to participate and meet up with the M-Fest crew and fellow S54 owners! There is a very large contingency here, you have friends here that you did not even know about!

Yeah, I will be looking forward to that type of stuff. I have met quite a few southern Cali folks on the boards. I won't be out there for several months though, around Jun 09.
