Wheel bearings

im having a similar problem also; every time i turn to the right or left, and whenever it straightens out, it creates noise and vibration from the rear. how much would replacing a wheel bearing cost without any warranty coverage?

Maybe $200 in labor. The bearing is about $100. The catch is....you might be offered an alignment for another $100.

If you do need a new hub, buy the one that is made by F AG except no space between the F and the A (forum filter would block the brand name).

I picked one up last summer and it was good quality.

I will have to research the difficulty of taking the bearing out. I want to see what it looks like and inspect for metal shavings or bearing damage.

The sound only occurs at highway speeds, only on and off ramps or otherwise fast, extended turns. The problem is inaudible otherwise.

yea im in the same boat, n my car only has 37k on it

...on turns it makes a sprinkler/scraping noise

After a few launches on a smooth slippery surface with the car wheel hopping like crazy, and shaking the whole car madly. A noticable humming noise occurs in the rear, even louder when I am off the gas pedal.

Is there any DIY on wheel bearing replacement??

The DIY is "buy the BMW B90 tool.". This is actually one job that I DO NOT recommend diying without good tools and some experience.

My problem was the wheel bearing. I also needed new front tires, which is what added to the sound.

If you're getting an intermittent scraping sound, you could actually be getting very slight rubbing on the front fender depending on your ride height and wheels/tires.

That doesn't sound like the type of "behavior" that would agitate a wheel bearing per se, but it wouldn't hurt to replace them as a first try (especially if they're original). As I understand it, it is hard lateral loading that stresses wheel bearings, not radial loading. However, if the car was wheel hopping and shaking like crazy, you never know. I'd be somewhat concerned with most of the drivetrain (especially axles).

I am haveing the same problem... I just left the tire shop and was told that it was in fact the wheel bearings... This is my first post here, so let me also say thank you for all of the knowledge on this board....
