aluminum rings are normally quite a bit more expensive for aluminum ones..

if i remember discountdirecttires.com or something like that sells them... tire rack has gone to the plastic ones and mackin the distributor of volks send out plastic ones with their wheels as well.. so obviously if used correctly then given that all these big names use them they are probably ok...

i decided to go with plastic ones first just to test fitment, since they were really cheap (around 12.00 shipped) then if they fit and i feel i need aluminum ones i will already know what size to order...

there are plenty of 74 to 72.6 rings out there because one of the models of the goofy 5 series has a 74.1mm hub bore so many companies make the bmw 5x120 to fit that wheel and use the centering ring to make up for the difference for other models...

apparently during the wheel making process it is much easier to adjust offsets as opposed to center bore of the wheel..

I have actually used duct tape on 3 cars to eliminate these vibrations.

If you can get aluminium ones, get them, I have had several plastic ones that have been broken when installing the wheels.

My rule of thumb with wheels are that you should be able to fit the wheel on the hub and let go without any bolts in and the wheel should not fall off.
If in doubt, put the wheel on the hub and try to move the wheel up-down-sideways, and if you can, you need rings.

The tape trick is a good way of troubleshooting, and I have used it with success on 3 of my cars, and also on friends cars.

Good luck, but I think your vibrations will go away when you get the rings installed.

good info... the rays wheels that i have are the first ones that have required centering rings. when i loosened the lugs and i could move the wheel substantially i was kind of freaked out...

i broke one of mine today installing it.. yikes.. i still have just a bit of movement when the lugs are not tightened, so i may try putting duct tape around them...

Man that sucks that you broke one already! I guess the plastic one's really are that fragile! So what are your plans with the duct tape? Makes me question ordering plastic hub rings...I haven't ordered rings yet so I might go with aluminum.

I saw the plastic rings (like you ordered on ebay) but they didn't have OD = 74.00mm ID = 72.56mm on ebay but they did have OD = 74.1mm ID = 72.56mm. Do you think these will work or will that .1mm make a huge difference?

Theseplastic ones are leaf thin, if you do not put the wheel straight on, they may fold and break.
Also to remove them from the hub when changing wheels may cause them to break.

Aluminium poses another problem calld galvanic corrosion, aluminium and steel don pair up very good, and they will corrode into each other in time.

That white powder that you see on your hubs when removing your alu wheels, that's corrosion.

If you only remove your wheels when changing tires, maybe the plastic ones are the one you need.

As for duct tape, or any other tape, start with a double layer, put the wheel on the hub and check for movement, add/remove tape until the wheel does not move on the hub.

just got this..

http://www.covalenceadhesives.com/Se...ls.aspx?ID=579

extreme weather.. lol... should hold up forever...

it is close to 1mm thick though.. i may just put them in place and put the foil tape over them as opposed to taping them on both sides since it is that thick...

we shall see.. it will essentially be an aluminum ring.. haha
