Default Radar Detector

Hi All,

I got the M3 a little while ago, (I'm still blown away by how amazing this car is!), and am finally done with my break in period. Now that I want to push the car, I feel naked driving without a radar. I was wondering if any of you had any ideas as to which ones are the best, or if they are just a waste of money. I would really appreciate some advice. Thanks!

I recently bought the Escort Passport 9500ix. It works well with minimal false alerts. You can read about radar detector reviews here: http://www.radartest.com/

The best ones are Escort Passport 9500 and Beltronics GX65. The Escort has 3 different 9500 models (i, ix, ci). The 9500i can't be updated for speed cameras, whereas the 9500ix can. The 9500ci is a custom install instead of the windshield mount so it is tiny and hidden; you would only need it in Virginia where it's not legal to have radar detectors, or if you don't like clutter on the dashboard. The 9500ci also is supposed to be undetectable by radar detector detectors and the 9500ci includes Laser shifters (aka Laser jammers, which is illegal in some states).

My V1 finally died a few months ago and I upgraded to the 9500ix and am really enjoying it. I'm a tech geek, so I enjoy the ability to update the firmware and location database directly from the web without having to send it back in. It's just as accurate as my old V1 and is much better about false alerts, so it's a step up in my opinion.

Escort 9500 with the GPS memory for false alarms gets my vote. I have been using this unit for a few months and if I had to do it again I would.

On the V1 site it says it is the only radar detector that has two scanners, front and back, so it will alert you if there is a cop behind your car.

Does Passport has the same feature? Does it scan front and back?

I hope it does because it is like $500, pretty expensive. I actually have been using 8500 for a very long time, and now it is time to change (I thought it had a 360 scanner, but now I am not sure).
