Someting I've always wanted to do - I'll save it for when I'm doing the clutch swap

All right.. here we go ... part #'s for those interested

23 11 7 542 726 (one bushing, sealing cap and snap ring) (one for 5th, one for reverse, one for 1st gear (if you want to do the third), order one extra if you think you might ruin one of the bushings, approx $5 a kit)
23 31 1 224 817 (reverse spring) real oem # 13
23 31 1 224 935 (5th gear spring) real oem #11
23 31 1 224 819 (1st gear spring) #15
23 31 7 502 165 (lock pin for 5th gear) #12
23 31 1 224 849 (lock pin for reverse gear) #14
23 31 1 224 823 (lock pin for 1st gear) #16

these part numbers will allow you to fix the 5th gear "lean" during cold weather. Also cleans up the "gate" into Reverse, as well as 1st gear. Most people usually only do 5th gear, and reverse gear

these part #'s are to fix the catch pin's per the service bulletin
23 11 7 525 048 (pins with bushings and springs, need 3) real oem #28
23 31 7 531 369 (seal caps, need 3) real oem #25

primary sources of information here
http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...9&postcount=11

real oem diagram link again here
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...29&hg=23&fg=15

the seal cap part # on real oem, and the link on BFC do not match up, but it is explained in this thread which is where the single post came from

just looked everything up at Tischer. If you get 3 repair kits (1 extra in case you screw up) and only do the 5th gear/reverse fix, (most common), new lock pins for both, and new springs for both, total would be $32.41 plus shipping

if you want to do the catch pin upgrade as well.. (I am going to order one extra, just in case, but for "reference" 3 repair kits, and 3 sealing caps, would be $31.89 plus shipping

As you can see, this is a cheap "fix" for the common E36 transmission gate issue, but the DIY can get a little tricky if you dont have the right tools. I have posted links to threads on BFC explaining everything, and if you spend 30-45 mins reading up on everything, you should be able to figure out what direction you want to go it

GOOD LUCK, and I hope everything works out
