Probably really expensive.

Found it at another dealer for $479. So i'm probably going to purchase it in the next week or two. After helmet and a few other things still a $600 investment, and winter is approaching. So i was on the fence. But I like the price.

My 2007 Gary Fisher HiFi Deluxe. I love this bike. It was my first "real" bike. I do plan on trading this in on a Super Fly Carbon 29er in the near future.

I saw the same one with disk at my local store for $439. My buddies and I are all going to jump on 4500's. $629 for the bike. Plus two bottle cages, flashing tail light, headlight, rising bar extenders, new tyres, new seat(you'll probably want to get a new seat as well, The stock trek seat are unforgiving),A bag for under the seat. After taxes and all I think I might be spending close to $900. But ride everyday for a month and eat chicken and you'll be in the best shape of your life. $900 well spent.

Definitely buy used! There are some great deals to be had either on CL or ebay. Many people buy top of the line stuff and let it collect dust before getting rid of it. A new 'affordable' bike (<$1k) is going to have mediocre components/frame at best. If you can accept that a mountain bike is intended to take some abuse, a used bike will be a bargain by comparison. I paid $2500 for a brand new Specialized FSRXC; my buddy bought the same exact bike WITH upgrades for $600 only 2 years later.

EDIT: also, don't get suckered into thinking you need the trick shocks, disc brakes, etc. Many bikes that have them nowadays cut cost on other components.

Some people still like hardtails but I prefer a full-suspension with rear lockout. More often you'll wish you had it than wish you didnt. Different brands have different geometry and riding charachteristics so I suggest you look around at a few different stores because most local shops will push what they sell on you. So many to choose from you owe it to find the one YOU like the best. Whatever you get, make sure someone helps you get fitted properly because that is more important than anything. If it's not sized for you it can be miserable to ride after a few miles whereas one that is spec'd to you will be a pleasure to ride all day.

^ $2500? your smokin crack. I'm looking at $500 max. Buying used deals can be had,but when buying forever, new is great, less worries and less hassle
