Hello
I've been suffering from dashboard rattle for few months. I've finally found the rattle and fixed it. For those of you who had suffered, hope this is your solution. This rattle which I though it was coming from inside of dashboard wasn't actually from inside of dashboard but it sounded very much like it was coming from inside of dash. It sounds like loose plastic touching plastic coming from center dash area, specially when engine's cold. Problem was the moulding which located behind the cabin filter housing. 1. pop the hood and locate the cabin filter cover with 3 locking pins. 2. Remove cabin filter cover and filter. 3. You'll find 4 screws underneath the wiper area, remove them 4. Locate the plastic wire cover on front of housing and unclip to remove plastic cover. 5. Remove the housing 6. Once housing removed, you'll find a wall with 2 screws on top left, right, and 1 locking pin on all the right center of the wall. Remove 2 screws and locking pin and remove the wall. 7. Once wall removed, you'll find rubber moulding placed around metal body. Tap it around and move it around and you'll notice it's loose and it flaps. Remove moulding completely 8. Fill the gap all the way with gang load of silicone. 9.Put moulding back in place and everything else in its place. It took me about an hour to finish and NO MORE DASH RATTLE. For door panel rattles, I'm going to remove both driver's and passenger's door panel and drive for few days to find out exactly what is causing rattle. I'll give you guys an update once I'm done. I've learned and discovered many great things about my M in this forum and I hope this minor fix would bring someone's smile back. Good Luck ![]() |

would replacing that moulding with a new one fix the rattling as well? I think this is the source of my rattle.
Its a gentle humming rattle when the engine is cold and at idle. Its gotten progressively worse where even when the engine is warmed up the humming rattle is still there when the car is at idle. |

Nice!
I've got that rattle too, and I wasn't looking forward to taking my dash apart to try to find it. Now I know where to look. I might just replace that seal, which isn't too expensive from the dealership. It's part #2 in the diagram: ![]()

Can someone who has replaced the molding (pn: 64 31 8 370 409) confirm that it fixes the rattle? Or are we left with only the silicone method mentioned by the OP?
