I think these situations go both ways. I totally understand the honor of a "handshake" and that it should be taken seriously. However, dealers put plenty of shady charges and paperwork over on buyers all the time. They shouldn't act so "shocked" when a customer requests a price change based on the market. They did not *have* to give in. They order cars all the time for the dealership lot. It's the cost of doing business. To get to my point, when I bought my last BMW, prior to the M, I negotiated everything down to the exact monthly payment on my 2005 330i ZHP. After a two month wait, when the car was delivered, they tried adding in some fees to the tune of almost $3000 when I was in with the finance guy getting ready to sign. They said these things are standard and my sales guy should have taken it into consideration when we negotiated. BS! The only thing standard is the price of the car, no special "overhead" fees or whatever they called it. They tried to pull a fast one on me. In the end, I came out on top. We put it behind us and there is a still a good relationship with the dealer. I barely even negotiated on my M3 and I got for 1k over invoice back in September. Makes me wish I tried a little harder. I bet I could've gotten a couple more thousand off.

Just a guess.
yeah but the price you pay and quality of service you get shouldn't be correlated.

Of course it is not, that was a dumb comment from Patty... Like you are going to get to service, and there's a note on the computer saying "he paid $1,600 less at purchase" Puh-lease...

Good job for having the kahonis to go back and negotiate. There is nothing wrong with what you did. I wish I could have empathy for dealerships, but way too many times have I seen them try to pull things that if I had not caught would have cost me many thousands of $ over the years.

ha i was thinking the same thing... *squint*

anyhow, i'm shocked that people are actually defending the dealership... this is a business negotiation, and whatever tactics are necessary to save some money should be used. dealerships screw people all the time, it's the nature of the business, so it's all fair.

Good job. Anything over invoice is just markup.

Congratulations BHP!!! I'm sure you will enjoy the car. As I read through all the post, I felt mixed feelings about the situation. I'm extremely glad you were able to get the car at invoice, I think your building a bridge for everyone else who wants to buy an M3(I'm still saving up for the down payment). I hope that motivates anyone else who is buying an M3 to negotiate as much as they can. It definitely gives me hope to get a price near or at invoice. As far as the salesman, i'm sure he made profit in other ways and was just upset that he couldn't make as much profit as he could have. I do think being a salesman is a tough job and its his job to make himself and the dealership as much money as possible. What I disagree with, is the way the dealership, the sales person, and the finance guy handle negotiations with the scams they can pull. Even if you get that car at invoice, just because you got the car at invoice they try to scam you with dealer fees(some are valid), extra charges, and if the bank approved you at 2.9% they might lie and say you got approved at 6.9% APR, because of all this I am glad you got invoice price. I just don't trust dealerships at all, they know all the tricks even when they sell at invoice. Also, I've been to two BMW dealerships to get a price quote. One of them called me back, but when I told the sales person that the other dealership had given me a lower price(which is true), he asked me "So if you got such a low price why didn't you buy it over there?" I answered, "Because I want to know if you can give me a better price", he got mad and hung up on me(which is not very professional). In the end, when you walk into a dealership its every man on their own. I hope this forum can come together and help everyone get great prices. I've definitely learned alot from reading through the forum. The more a person knows before walking into a dealership the better. By the way if anyone can help, what are the dealer fees a dealer should charge? Does anyone out there still have their invoice that they can look through? Again, congratulations on your new car!! Saving 1.6k on a car can cover the cost of a future repair, its not like those repairs come cheap after the warranty expires.
