Would appreciate some education on what comprises the VANOS assembly. Reason being, I had to replace the entire VANOS unit as a result of breaking one of the "teeth" on the camshaft gear which in turn completely compromised the VANOS system. I was fortunate that the broken part (tooth?) didn't get sucked in the timing chain and blow the engine. Anyways, 4 weeks removed from a very expensive repair I am getting a P0010 error code. Question is: If the solenoid valve and gasket's are all part of the VANOS unit (~$4k unit), is this error perhaps simple as a fault CPS sensor?

Is P0010 Intake Camshaft Vanos Position Control?

I'd go right back to the shop that fixed it and the timing checked.

The VANOS system is comprised of two basic components - the Actuator (the part that has the two pistons that moves the camshafts), and the Solenoids, which fire the pistons (Advance/Retard).

You could be getting that code either because a) the motor is incorrectly timed, and your cam position sensor isn't reading what the DME is expecting (usually about 60 degrees on the intake side at idle), b) your VANOS actuator is not advancing/retarding your cams consistently, or c) you have a faulty sensor.

Frankly its easy to diagnose with a computer (bad sensors give inconsistent/drop out readings, otherwise a GT1 Vanos test will tell you whether or not the actuator can move the cams through their full range of motion). Take it back to the shop you had this work done.

I have oil leaking underneath and around this vanos unit. Is it possible that it's from the solenoid o rings? If so, can I just remove my solenoid, replace gaskets and reinstall with the same bolts and solenoid? I don't have any codes and am not lacking performance, just leaking oil. The dealer thinks its the head gasket..

Yes, the sealing plate is around $15 and takes about 15 mins. to replace. The mounting bolts should be tightened evenly to 5 Nm.

Thank you, has anyone heard of or seen any posts about the solenoid being the source of an oil leak? I am unable to find anything through searching the forum. Here is my post with pictures:

Isn't 5 Nm about 44lbs of torque?

Sounds like a lot even though the OP said its light

5 newton meter = 3.68 pound foot

Go very easy on those bolts.
